Bancyfelin's lunch club with a difference!

A group of older people living in Carmarthen are going back to school to enjoy a traditional roast dinner.
Bancyfelin School is working in partnership with the county council’s Catering Service to operate a luncheon club with a difference.
Once a week, older people living in the community are invited in to the school hall to enjoy the same nutritious lunch enjoyed by the pupils – many of whom are their own grandchildren.
The club is held every Wednesday, which is ‘roast dinner day’ on the primary schools’ three-week rolling menu.
In its second week of operation, around 20 older people have joined the club.
Sandra Weigel, Catering Service Manager, said: “This is a new service which is already proving very popular and worthwhile. Nesta and Amy, the cooks at the school kitchen, are working well as a team to provide a high quality meal for everyone young and old on these days.
“Many of the older people who have attended have been surprised with the quality of the meals that they are served, which perhaps shows how much school meals have improved over the years.
“This club is providing people with a great chance to socialise with one another, whilst enjoying a nutritiously balanced and low cost meal.
“It is also proving very worthwhile for the children, who are involved in preparing for the meal service and clearing away afterwards.”
Member Vera Thomas said: “This breaks up the week for many of us who live on our own – it gives us the chance to get out of the house and catch up on eachother’s news.”
Headteacher of Bancyfelin Gwyneth Stephens, said: “We are proud to offer this service which helps to maintain contact between the school and the community. It is also a great chance for children to see their grandmothers and grandfathers.”
