Health Board commitment to improved facilities for cancer patients at Withybush Hospital

Hywel Dda University Health Board (UHB) reconfirmed its commitment to provide improved facilities for cancer patients at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, at its latest Board meeting. The new Director of Operations/Deputy Chief Executive Joe Teape presented a paper outlining the background to the project and recently agreed governance structures to ensure the work is driven forward at pace. As senior responsible officer for the development, Mr Teape confirmed that clinician-led discussions are taking place on the future model for Withybush Hospital to maintain 24/7 acute medicine on site. New Chemotherapy Day Unit at Withybush Hospital

A new Chemotherapy Day Unit at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, is a step closer following the first meeting of a new project group which will oversee the development. The project group, with representation from Hywel Dda University Health Board, local charity Adam’s Bucketful of Hope Appeal and Hywel Dda Community Health Council (CHC), provides an opportunity to work together to provide chemotherapy services in a modern facility in Haverfordwest. The people of Pembrokeshire have been raising money for this unit in memory of Adam Evans-Thomas who raised £9000 before he died to thank hospitals that cared for him during his 10 year fight against leukaemia. Adam’s mother, Christine Evans-Thomas set up the charity and has continued to fulfil his legacy with fundraising for a state of the art Chemotherapy Day Unit. Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) receives new training resources

Supporters of the Withybush Hospital Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) recently presented a new training aid to the team which will be used to increase skill levels within the CDU and more widely. The aid will enable the nursing team to provide information to patients and perfect intravenous procedures. It will also be used in the training of district nurses who work with cancer patients in the community and also members of the nursing team based at Withybush Hospital CDU and Ward 10. The funds for the aid were raised by the Withybush Hospital CDU Appeal through its charity shop located at Riverside, Haverfordwest. Haematology Nurse Specialist Sister Tracey Thomas said: “We are grateful to those who support the CDU with donations and those who support the charity shop. This equipment is invaluable to us and will help ensure the best possible patient care here in Pembrokeshire.” Charity chairperson Margaret Bond added “It is always rewarding when, as a charity, we have the opportunity to ...
