Members of Blaenconin Baptist Chapel launched a major initiative which will transform community action in Llandysilio, Pembrokeshire. Over the coming months, a new Community Interest Company established by the Church will be leading the development of the chapel site (opposite the Nantyffin Motel) to provide a Centre to celebrate the life and work of the renowned bard, Waldo Williams and other poets from the locality. It will also encompass the re-configuring of the current Chapel building to enable more community activity to take place and develop its vestry for residential accommodation to help sustain the new Centres. When completed, there will be two Centres on the site: the new Canolfan Waldo and Canolfan Blaenconin. In Canolfan Blaenconin there will be multi-purpose spaces which can be used for a range of activities from book clubs to pre-school groups, from training sessions to choirs. Llanelli Scarlets and British and Irish Lions rugby legend Delme Thomas agrees that a cup of tea is always welcome as he chats with Dyfrig Davies (centre) and the Reverend Huw George at Blaenconin Chapel’s recent Cymdeithas Cacen a Chlonc (cake and 'clonc' chat society) social event in Llandysilio. During the lively function, Delme regaled his large audience with a host of interesting insights, from his much acclaimed rugby career.

Venture into Llandysilio on Saturday or Sunday, September 21 and 22 and you will come across festival go-ers finding their way to a range of celebratory events. The culture and heritage festival boasts five separate events over the two days and it aims to highlight local successes and achievements and attract attention to the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the area. The locality is well known for its poets such as Waldo Williams and Llwyd Williams and the contribution of both to literature and to Pembrokeshire will be explored over the weekend. In addition, the festival will see the launch of two inspiring projects to celebrate the success of the James Brothers who, in 1913, were the first people to build and fly an aeroplane over Pembrokeshire.
