Nominations are now open for the prestigious annual Carmarthen Town Sports Awards. Carmarthen Town Council is inviting nominations for the 2016 Carmarthen Town Sports Awards. Sporting clubs and members of the public are requested to submit their nominations for each of the 11 categories. An independent selection panel of sporting experts will decide on the winners of each category. All winners will be invited to attend to receive their award at the Presentation Evening to be held on Friday 26th January 2018 at the Carmarthen Quins Rugby Football Club. Nominations need to be submitted to Mrs Eleri James at the Carmarthen Town Council offices by no later than Monday 27th November 2017. County Hall in Carmarthen made a colourful splash for Shwmae Su’mae this year. The night before Diwrnod Shwmae Day a colourful image of the Welsh language initiative was thrown across one of the towers of County Hall. It was organised by Carmarthen Town Council with the co-operation of the County Council. The image was created by Swci Delic (the designer Mared Lenny) from Carmarthen. Thousands of individuals, schools and societies of all kinds from across Carmarthenshire and the whole of Wales took part in Diwrnod Shwmae Day on Saturday when people were encouraged to greet each other with ‘Shwmae?’ to promote the Welsh language. From toddlers to seasoned veterans, they all turned out for the annual Carmarthen Mayor’s Fun Run races staged in the town centre on Bank Holiday Monday. Runners of all shapes and sizes took to the streets of Carmarthen, helping to raise cash for many different charities. “It was a great, fun occasion, with the accent firmly on everyone having fun,” said Carmarthen Mayor  Councillor Barry Williams. “This is the 35th year for the races to be held in Carmarthen and each year it is a delight to see hundreds of families enjoy the experience. The fun run races go from strength to strength. “The toddlers race, where mums and dads joined their more athletic youngsters around the town centre circuit, was great fun. “There was keen competition in many of the school-age races and a decent field of nearly 250 athletes for the main 5K race over three laps of the town centre circuit.” Everyone who finished received a special medal. Carmarthen Town Park is to play host to a junior park run. The event, which is part of the hugely popular park run running movement, has been set up by the council’s sport and leisure team after securing £3k match funding from Sport Wales. Due to start in May, a series of timed 2k runs aimed at ages 4-14 year olds will be held every Sunday from 9am. To take part children need to register on parkrun website where they will be issued with a bar code to scan at the start and end of each event. They’ll also be able to check their progress and timings on the website’s results page. Park run is a non-profit running, movement which organises free weekly events around the world and are open to everyone, are free and safe and easy to take part in. Runners of all ages, shapes and sizes are being encouraged to take part in the Fun Run races on May Bank Holiday Monday. The event, which has been held in the town over the past 33 years, will take place on the morning of Bank Holiday Monday, May 4. "This is the 34th running of the races and we are hoping for a bumper turnout," said race organiser Noelwyn Daniel. "In particular, we are keen to inject as much fun as possible into the event - encouraging people to take part in fancy dress and asking local sporting teams, organisations, pubs and clubs to consider entering teams. Cultural signs proposed | This is South Wales Interpretation panels could be on their way to historical and cultural sites across Carmarthen town centre. The town council has lodged a planning application with Carmarthenshire Council for panels giving information to the public to be put up at the Quay and on Old Oak roundabout in Priory Street.
