New look for the Old School in Llanybydder

Image
Work is starting on the Old School in Llanybydder in February to create a cardio room, community space and wet room following grant support from RDP Sir Gâr and CWM Environmental. Llanybydder Old School committee purchased the building in 1998, with the vision of developing the building into a community space. A small community gym has developed, which is maintained by the committee. The Committee is now aiming to further develop the building in to a community space for residents of Llanybydder village and the wider community, and to address the gaps in service and leisure provision within the community. A joint package of support from RDP Sir Gâr will see Innovative Communities fund the wet room, community space and works to develop a cardio room and the Rural Community Inclusion project will fund building works on the ground floor. RDP Sir Gâr’s Innovative Communities, part of the Axis 4 Innovative Hubs scheme, and Rural Community Inclusion have provided funding of £45,000 towards ...

Carmarthen schoolchildren get planting

Carmarthen schoolchildren have swopped their pens and pencils for shovels to help better their environment. Abergwili School pupils took time out of the classroom to plant fruit trees in the village during National Tree Week. Around 30 children from years five and six spent the morning preparing the soil and planting at the former Gwili Villas Farm site. The fruit will be used locally. The project was spearheaded by Abergwili Community Council having raised money through Cwm Environmental to encourage food growing in their area. The school is also supported by Carmarthenshire Community Challenge - a campaign to reduce the carbon footprint. Chairman of Abergwili Community Council Neil Lewis said: “The children at the village school are helping and learning to grow their own fruit. They are learning these crucial skills through the many volunteers from the village. “We are hoping to plant 20 fruit trees and soft fruit hedging to encourage bees and birds.” The local youth club led wi...

School pupils learn more about recycling

Young people from the Gwendraeth Valley have been learning about waste and what they can do to reduce their impact on the planet. Pupils from Ysgol Y Gwendraeth visited the Materials Recycling Facility in Johnstown, Carmarthen, to find out what happens to the rubbish we recycle in Carmarthenshire. All our blue bags are taken to the facility, which is run by CWM Environmental , and the contents sorted so that the plastic, paper, cans and cardboard can be processed and turned into something new. The youngsters also visited the landfill site at Nantycaws as part of a project with Menter Cwm Gwendraeth and funded by Oxfam called ‘Connect’. MCG youth worker Rebecca Storch said: “We learnt that we buy things that we don't really need and that a lot of those things are designed to be thrown away, like water bottles, coffee cups, plastic cutlery, and plastic wrapping. “The young people saw that everything they buy makes a difference to the earth in a positive or negative way. They rea...
