A team based at Morriston Hospital has tapped into technology to allow patients to “attend” clinics without leaving home.  Getting to hospital for appointments is not always easy for anyone living in rural areas – and even more so for those with multiple sclerosis. Now the regional MS team has won a prestigious award for making access much easier through the use of smart phones and tablets. The team may be based in Morriston but it covers the ABMU and Hywel Dda areas, looking after people living as far north as Ceredigion. Video conferencing facilities have been used for many years to allow Morriston staff to hold clinics in Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth. This was increased in 2012 with the support of the MS Society, reducing travelling time and costs for the clinicians – but with no additional benefit to patients as they still had to get to Bronglais. Prostate cancer expert Pradeep Bose was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli. Mr Bose gave a very instructive talk on the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer and other urinary problems. The vote of thanks was given by Rotarian Mark Evans. Mr Bose, who works at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, is pictured with Llanelli Rotary Club President Ken Abban, left, and President elect Hywel Bassett. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service Firefighters from Morriston, Gorseinon, Pontarddulias and Pontardawe recently carried out an exercise at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, involving a simulated fire in the operating theatre suite, designed to test the hospital's internal emergency procedures, as well as providing a realistic scenario for firefighters to deal with. Firefighters were deployed to the affected area wearing breathing apparatus and laying out equipment to carry out simulated firefighting and search and rescue activities, whilst hospital staff were treating patients and implementing their own emergency procedures for such incidents. The exercise was carried out with absolute minimal interruption to the routine operation of the theatres, and as such did not affect the care and treatment of patients which was continually monitored and maintained by hospital staff.

Hywel Dda Health Board | State of the Heart new treatment for Hywel Dda patients Hywel Dda Health Board area residents now receive the most up-to-date treatment for a heart attack, previously only available in Wales to those living in the Cardiff and Swansea area. Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PPCI) is the most up-to-date medical technology to treat a heart attack.  It is delivered in the high-tech environment of a cardiac catheter laboratory at Morriston Hospital’s Cardiac Centre. PPCI is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

BBC Sport - Wales and Scarlets prop Rhys Thomas undergoes heart surgery Wales international prop Rhys Thomas has undergone heart surgery after being taken ill during training with the Scarlets, the Welsh club has confirmed. The 29-year-old was taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea on Thursday morning and has "undergone successful surgery" and is in a "comfortable condition".
