Residents of Pembrokeshire are being urged to find out how to love their liver during the Love Your Liver campaign, this January. To spread awareness and educate people about liver health, professionals will be visiting a series of locations across the Hywel Dda University Health Board (UHB) area, in the coming weeks. Nicola Reeve, Blood-borne Virus Clinical Nurse Specialist, Hywel Dda University Health Board explained: “You may not hear much about it but your liver is your largest organ and is amazing as it has over 500 different roles in the body! “If you do think about your liver you may think about alcohol – a major risk factor which can affect the health of your liver. Breaking down poisons and toxins such as alcohol is just one of your liver’s jobs. “Two other major risk factors which can affect the health of your liver are hepatitis and obesity. An independent member of Hywel Dda University Health Board has been actively supporting the flu campaign and has spoken of his own family’s experience of the illness. Pembrokeshire Councillor Dr Simon Hancock is urging all NHS staff to receive their free flu jab this autumn to protect vulnerable patients in hospitals across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. Dr Hancock also stresses the importance of being vaccinated if people are in at risk group; pregnant women, people aged 65 and over, carers and those with certain long-term health conditions. For people in these groups the flu jab is provided for free in GP surgeries and participating community pharmacies. Dr Hancock, who is the Independent Member representative for the flu campaign, said: “I would encourage those at risk and those who work in health and social care to have the flu jab as it is an effective preventive measure which could avoid you and others from becoming seriously ill. “I have an interest in influen...

The annual campaign to encourage people in eligible groups to have the free NHS flu vaccination and protect themselves from the illness has been launched. Beat Flu is a call to those aged 65 and over, people with certain long term health conditions and pregnant women to get vaccinated. Carers, volunteers providing care or providing first aid in organised public events, as well as Community First Responders, are also entitled to the vaccine, which is delivered as a small injection in the arm. To arrange your vaccine or to find out if you are eligible contact your GP surgery as soon as possible. Flu jabs are also available in some community pharmacies. This year the vaccine programme is being extended so children between the ages of two and six will be eligible. The vaccine is administered as a nasal spray and those aged two and three will receive it at their GP practice while those aged four, five and six (reception, year 1 and 2) will receive the spray at school.
