There is still time to give your views on new orders drawn up to tackle dog fouling and the control of dogs in public places in Carmarthenshire. Residents and stakeholders are being urged to please visit the Carmarthenshire Council  website and fill in the survey to tell us what they think. The orders include cleaning up after your dog on all public land in the county, putting your dog on a lead when directed to do so by an authorised officer and excluding dogs from children’s play areas. Proposals to help control dogs in Carmarthenshire’s public places have been given the go ahead by Carmarthenshire Council’s Executive Board. The board met to discuss making Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) subject to a formal consultation exercise being carried out. The orders include cleaning up after your dog on all public land in the county, putting your dog on a lead when directed by an authorised officer and excluding dogs from children’s play areas. Further recommendations from the Environmental and Public Protection Scrutiny Committee to introduce orders for dogs to be kept on leads on sports pitches, parks and playgrounds and on all public highways were not taken forward at this time. People in Carmarthenshire are being asked for their views on new orders for controlling dogs in public places. The council is consulting on Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) which can be used to tackle the problem of irresponsible dog ownership. Residents are being urged to tell us what they think by completing a short survey. A number of new powers were created under the Anti-social, Crime and Policing Act 2014 to give local authorities greater flexibility in tacking irresponsible dog owners and incidents involving dogs. Some replace existing powers while others are new; for example, they can be used to exclude dogs from certain areas or require dogs to be on leads. A report is going before the council’s Environmental and Public Protection Scrutiny Committee outlining the new powers under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. An extensive public consultation exercise is to be carried out to get residents views on the Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs). These PSPOs replace former Dog Control Orders which were previously being considered under the Clean Neighbourhoods Act.
