Llanelli schoolchildren get involved in wildflower planting

Children from Llanelli schools are playing their part in supporting the local environment and making their communities brighter as part of a wildflower planting initiative. Carmarthenshire County Council trialled wildflower planting in several areas last summer, and received great feedback from local people and visitors about the natural, colourful look they bring over the summer months. Several council departments have got together again this year to prepare wildflowers for the season, and have also got local school children involved. Among them are children on the eco committee and gardening clubs at Halfway and Dafen primary schools. They joined the council’s housing and grounds maintenance teams to prepare ground and scatter seeds on housing land in the Dafen area. Supported by Environmental Works Project funding from Housing Services, the children helped plant seeds on land that had been weeded and rotivated in advance, and raked over the soil to ensure they were well planted. More Carmarthenshire schools to offer a 'Flying Start'

Three more schools in Carmarthenshire will be offering a Flying Start to children in their areas from this autumn. Dafen, Ysgol y Bedol and Bynea primary schools will benefit from the investment which is a Welsh Government Early Years preventative programme. It is aimed at families with children who are under four years of age and is targeted in some of the most deprived areas in Wales. Carmarthenshire County Council Leader Cllr Kevin Madge said he welcomed the news which would benefit so many children. “Flying Start is an excellent initiative which aims to make a real difference to the lives of children under four in the areas where it runs,” Cllr Madge said. “It is really good news for Carmarthenshire that three more schools will be able to offer children and families this opportunity.” The core elements of the Flying Start programme are: Free, quality, part-time childcare for two to three year olds.
