For the second consecutive year Carmarthen‘s Magpies Gift Shop is supporting Carmarthenshire County Council’s Toybox appeal. Andy James, of Magpies is offering 10 per cent off gifts which will be donated to the appeal. A letter was sent to all local businesses asking if they were able to help support the appeal, which was founded by Carmarthenshire County Council in 2011, to help families in need. Last year, the Christmas Toybox Appeal collected and distributed over 2,500 gifts, benefitting disadvantaged families across Carmarthenshire. Carmarthenshire’s Deputy Leader and Anti-Poverty Champion, Cllr Pam Palmer, said: “This is exciting news. It is the second year in a row we have received support from Magpies. Motorists in Carmarthenshire are being warned to watch their speed or pay the penalty. Speeding is a major concern for communities and was a top priority in the recent Residents’ Survey carried out by the council. As a result, a much work is being carried out by the Community Safety Partnership to reduce the speed of traffic and educate drivers about the consequences of driving too fast. The partnership has funded a Speed Indicator Device for Neighbourhood Policing Teams to use with schools and community groups. Anyone caught going over the limit is stopped and asked to explain themselves to the children or residents. It has also paid for three speed measurement devices for officers to deploy in areas where concerns of speeding have been raised by residents through PACT meetings. Pupils at Peniel School have designed their own posters to encourage people to pick up their litter. It follows a visit at the end of last term from Eco Eli, the council’s eco-friendly mascot, along with local member Councillor Pam Palmer. The school’s Eco Committee had written to Councillor Palmer because they were concerned about the amount of litter in the village, in particular cigarette ends and dog mess. Councillor Palmer and council education and awareness and environmental enforcement officers went along to the Green Flag school to talk to the pupils and it was decided to hold a poster competition. There were four winners overall - Manon James, Jack Green, Lowri Joyner and Taryn Williams - and Councillor Palmer provided the prizes. Their posters will also be on display on litter bins throughout the village.
