A breast cancer survivor who has raised £1,000s for Prince Philip Hospital has made her most recent donation. Sue Ladd was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and has since made a full recovery. She received such fantastic care and support from staff at Prince Philip and Singleton Hospitals that she set up a registered charity, Sue Ladd and Friends, to raise funds for the units as a way of saying thanks. Since 2005 Sue Ladd & Friends have raised over £145,000 by organising a wide range of fun fundraising activities – from an annual charity ribbon race to a grand auction evening. The Breast Care Unit at Prince Philip Hospital has been the main beneficiary of financial support but they also support other local causes. They recently presented Mr Yeung Ng, Consultant Urological Surgeon, Hywel Dda University Health Board, with a cheque for £500 which will go towards the purchase of a state of the art ultrasound machine to help fight prostate cancer. On December 6 at 7.30pm Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre, based at Singleton Hospital, are hosting their first year celebration dinner at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea – in association with the South Wales Evening Post. Hywel Dda Health Board | New developments in Singleton Hospital Singleton Hospital in Swansea is to have £4.299 million for two new developments to improve the care facilities for children and for elderly patients. The Minister for Health and Social Services, Lesley Griffiths, has announced the funding to enable the existing elderly medicine facility to be re-located from Hill House, a community hospital in central Swansea, to Ward 4 at Singleton Hospital. Two physically separate wards at Hill House cater for rehabilitation and ongoing recovery of older people with chest and/or heart or stroke problems.

If you can hear a click-clicking sound in the Trimsaran area, it's likely you are listening to the busy knitting needles of local resident Viola Edwards. The 80-year-old, who lives at the county council's Llys Y Godian Sheltered Scheme, spends most of her days knitting countless bonnets, matinee coats, booties and shawls - all in aid of two causes very dear to her heart. The great grandmother hand-makes the woolly warmers for the special care baby units at Singleton and Glangwili hospitals, and also knits to sell and raise money for Llanelli's Ty Bryngwyn Hospice. "I want to show my appreciation for the staff at the special care baby units, and two of my great grandchildren were born prematurely, and they cared for them wonderfully," said Mrs Edwards. "I have no idea how many baby clothes I have knitted over the years - probably too many to count - but unfortunately I can't knit as much as I'd like to these days because of my health."
