Figures show that Carmarthenshire is in the top five performing local authorities in Wales for fly-tipping enforcement. The number of recorded fly-tipping incidents in the county fell from 1,438 in 2013/14 to 1,306 in 2014/15*. Environmental enforcement officers carried out a total of 1208 investigations last year as well as 101 ‘duty of care’ related inspections. Some 245 warning letters were sent out and the authority prosecuted six individuals for fly-tipping offences resulting in fines. Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones, said: “Carmarthenshire operates a proactive strategy when dealing with fly-tipping. Fly-tipping Action Wales is making a fresh appeal for people in Carmarthenshire to think twice before getting rid of waste from their homes, in an early attempt to clamp down on fly-tipping over the festive season. The call from the Welsh Government-funded partnership of more than 50 partner agencies comes as latest fly-capture figures* show the annual clean-up cost totalled £2.2 million last year (01 April 2010 – end March 2011). According to the official figures, released by Welsh Government, 4,941 cases of fly-tipping were reported during Christmas and New Year** across Wales. With household budgets expected to be stretched this Christmas, the partnership is calling on people to make way for Christmas gifts in their homes by getting rid of unwanted goods, such as toys or electrical equipment, responsibly. Residents in Nantgaredig are being urged to have a good clear out and recycle any rubbish they have lying around the home. A ‘Recycling on the go’ event is being held on Saturday, August 13 in the primary school between 8am and 10.30am. Householders can take advantage of this one-off chance to dispose of any large items of rubbish for free. Most household waste can be taken along including bulky waste items such as furniture and electrical goods. However, asbestos, tyres, paint, garden chemicals, batteries, gas bottles, construction waste and trade waste will not be accepted. As much as possible will be recycled. The event has been organised by Carmarthenshire County Council and the aim is to encourage residents to dispose of waste that may otherwise be fly-tipped as well as encourage them to recycle and/or reuse as much of their rubbish as possible. A new multi-agency drive to tackle fly-tipping is being launched in Carmarthenshire. The week-long ‘Total Focus’ campaign will include clean-ups, community skip days, waste carrier stop-checks and duty of care advice to residents and businesses in fly-tipping hotspots throughout the county. Part of the Fly-tipping Action Wales initiative, partners include Carmarthenshire County Council, Keep Wales Tidy, Dyfed-Powys Police, Environment Agency Wales, Tidy Towns, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Llwynhendy Communities First and Wales Probation Trust. A Llandeilo man has been fined a total of £800 for fly-tipping. Nicky Benjamin John Lewis, aged 20, of Greenfield Place, Llandeilo, pleaded guilty to an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 at Ammanford Magistrates Court. The prosecution was brought by Carmarthenshire County Council. The court heard that the council’s environmental enforcement officers received a complaint of waste which had been dumped in a lane just off the main A40 Llandeilo to Llandovery road, approximately two miles from Llandeilo. It included general household waste, toys and clothes. The complainant had also recovered evidence from the scene which identified the waste coming from a house in Llandeilo. The investigation identified the offender to be Lewis. He was interviewed by the officers who were told that he had been paid to remove the waste from a property in Llandeilo, but his vehicle had broken down and that it hade been easier to push the vehicle without it being loaded.
