This month sees the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, known also as the October Crisis and the Caribbean Crisis, which was a 13-day confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States over the presence of missile sites in Cuba. To mark the anniversary, the Centre for Intelligence and International Security Studies at Aberystwyth University and the Cambridge Intelligence Group at the University of Cambridge are hosting a major international conference at Gregynog Hall near Newtown from 25-27 October. Professor Len Scott, from the Department of International Politics, explains, “The discovery of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba was one of the dramatic periods of the Cold War, and possibly the most dangerous moment in human history. “The conference will seek to address the legacies and lessons of the Cuban Missile Crisis by means of a number of papers and round-table discussions. Footballers in Newtown celebrate after windfall from Dyfed Powys Police incentivisation fund. | Dyfed Powys Police | Heddlu Dyfed Powys Newtown under 9s have new training tops which were bought thanks to a £485 grant from Dyfed Powys Police’s incentivisation fund. Alongside members of the club in the Dyfed Powys Police website photo are the club chairman  Alan Owen, coach Paul Herdman and assistant coach Neil Jarman. “This money is much appreciated by the club and has been put to good use in buying much needed kit for the under 9s,” said Mr Herdman. “We’re grateful to the force for giving us the grant.”

Criminal damage under investigation in Newtown | Dyfed Powys Police | Heddlu Dyfed Powys Two separate instances of criminal damage are the focus for police investigations in Newtown.

Newtown police are appealing for witnesses or information to a criminal damage which occurred sometime between 8.30pm on Wednesday 21st December and 12pm on Thursday 22nd December in Lon Gwern, Trehafren, Newtown. Someone has caused damage to a grey Audi A4 parked at the location by scratching both sides of the vehicle with a sharp tool. BBC Sport - Newtown unhappy over Welsh Premier League points loss Newtown have had three points deducted by the Welsh Premier League after fielding ineligible players. Sorry, a bit late uploading this match report from the previous weekend - Newtown 4 Carmarthen Town 2 Carmarthen Town went down to another defeat which meant that they now occupy bottom place in the Welsh Premier League. The EH Factors and Clothing sponsored Town team started the game confidently and were soon asking questions of the Home defence. Nick Harrhy, who had an effective game, was causing problems down the left hand side and several inviting crosses entered the Newtown box. Carmarthen Town 0 Newtown 1 A solitary headed goal after 11 minutes by Newtown’s Robbie Millington proved to be the difference between the two sides. Millington’s conversion of a right wing cross gave new manager Bernard McNally the perfect start as the manager of the Mid Wales side.
