People who want bring their community together are being invited to a workshop that explains how they can get involved in the nationwide Big Lunch event in June. The Big Lunch is a lottery funded project that inspires thousands of people across the UK to get together with friends and neighbours for lunch or a picnic. The national event takes place on Sunday, June 12 (2016), but anyone can organise an event on or near that date. Big Lunch and Big Picnic events have been successfully held in Pembrey Country Park and Carmarthen in recent years, but now community engagement organisation Spice, working with Carmarthenshire County Council’s community engagement teams, are hoping more communities will hold events across the county. A workshop will be held at St John's Church Hall, Priory St, Carmarthen, on Tuesday, May 3, from 9.30am to 12pm, which will be repeated at Felinfoel Resource Centre, Llanelli, at 1pm to 3.30pm on the same day. Shops struggling with the recession and rising energy costs are being offered a helping hand by South Wales researchers. Aberystwyth University and the Dyfi Biosphere are inviting local retail businesses to take part in one of their free workshops taking place in Aberystwyth on Wednesday 11th July and Machynlleth on Thursday 12th July. The workshop series is designed specifically for small and medium sized retailers, and aim to help them recognise that climate change presents a real and valuable opportunity to build and sustain their businesses. Above all, the project will explore ways of helping businesses break free from the current constraints of the economic recession. Many businesses are beginning to realise the benefits of adapting to a changing climate. Young people’s efforts and developments were recognised at the Engage Project celebratory event at Ffos Las, Trimsaran. A total of 150 Engage participants between the ages of 14 and 19 participated in a range of interactive workshops during the day; workshops were delivered by Coleg Sir Gar, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Youth Service, Menter Bro Dinefwr, CAVS, Menter Cwm Gwendraeth, Llanelli Centre Project and the Youth Offending Prevention Service. Young people had taster sessions on multi media, volunteering, the dangers of substance misuse, how to build your own future, team building, a fashion show based on recycled material and bike maintenance. Carmarthen’s leading theatre arts school, Stagecoach, is already planning its summer activities. Mums and dads planning summer holidays for their children will be delighted to learn that the Stagecoach team will be holding a week-long workshop, from August 6-10. “We all know it can be difficult planning activities for children during the long summer holidays,” said Stagecoach Carmarthen principal Liane Davies. “But we’re making it easy, at least for one week!” Stagecoach Theatre Arts Carmarthen will be staging two different workshops side by side at the Queen Elizabeth High School. “We are very lucky,” said Liane. “Julia Donaldson, the author of Gruffalo (a real children’s favourite) has given us permission to stage a workshop for four to six-year-olds. “The children will get a pretty intense week working on the Gruffalo, but we promise it will be fun all the way. “The week will lead up to a special performance of the Gruffalo on Friday, August 10. “For the older children, the ...
