The IPC Athletics European Championships will be held in Swansea this August. The South Wales Evening Post asked me to put some thoughts together on 'volunteering'. Here is what I wrote for them . . . Robert Lloyd is a media consultant based in Carmarthen and Llanelli. He is a former editor of the Carmarthen Journal and Llanelli Star and former deputy editor of the South Wales Evening Post. Why volunteer? If you have to ask yourself the question, then volunteering may not be for you. The simple answer is that the cost (in time, money and effort) is easily outweighed by the benefit (the feel-good factor of ‘putting something back’ into society, opportunities for new friendships and some life-changing and hugely memorable experiences). Some people ‘get it’. Some don’t. If you get it, you’ll know what I mean. David Roberts is the greatest male Paralympian the UK has ever produced. Motivating and inspiring, David will share his story with visitors to the Business Network B2B show at Parc y Scarlets on Thursday, May 2. David was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 11 and was encouraged to participate in swimming activities as a form of physical therapy. David took part in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics and then went to the 2004 Athens Games.   He won four gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and was part of the gold medal winning Great Britain 4×100 m freestyle relay team that broke the world record by seven seconds. Other members of the team were Graham Edmunds, Robert Welbourn and Matthew Walker. Paralympic swimming legend David Roberts CBE is embarking on a new mission to help charity. He's planning a special fund-raising evening called the Noah’s Ark Night of Champions at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Cardiff, on 1st May at 7pm. The Noah’s Ark Night of Champions is the official launch of Paralymic Gold Medalist David's ‘Extreme Triathlon’ in aid of the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital Charity. Guests of David's include: Aled Davies MBE, Mark Colbourne MBE, John Harris and social entrepreneur and Secret Millionaire Kevin Green.
