The guest speaker at the weekly meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club held at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli, was Malcolm Shead from the Shelterbox Response Team. Mr Shead is from Llandeilo and recently visited Burma to help some of the 70,000 people believed to have been displaced by civil unrest. Mr Shead, who works from his home in Bridge Street, Llandeilo, has been working with the ShelterBox project for more than four years. ShelterBox is supported by Rotary clubs worldwide. The UK charity ships out boxes with essential survival kit to countries hit by natural disasters and war. Mr Shead said he was proud to be involved with ShelterBox. "The first time I went away it was the earthquake in Chile," he said. "Two years ago I went to some bad flooding in Colombia, and last year I was in the Peruvian Amazon, which experienced the worst flooding in the Amazon basin for 40 years." A special Gala Concert is being staged at St Donat's Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan in aid of Rotary's international ShelterBox project. The concert is billed as 'An evening with Francesco Attesti, the internationally acclaimed Italian pianist'. It is being held on Saturday 27th April, 2013 at 7.30pm in Bradenstoke Hall, St Donat's Castle. The concert will include works by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Brahms and Gershwin. Tickets at £15 may be purchased from the St Donat's Arts Centre. The Box Office is open 10am - 4pm Monday to Friday. Forest fires, floods, windstorms and getting hit by a truck – just a few of the hazards faced by two tandem riders pedalling across South Wales this month as part of a truly epic cycle challenge. Huw and Carolyn Thomas have spent the past year riding 10,000 miles on a tandem, towing a large green box on a trailer behind them. The green box is a ShelterBox – more normally used for delivering emergency aid to families who have lost their homes in disasters all over the world. Averaging 50 miles a day in the saddle, the two riders have already crossed North America, New Zealand and parts of Australia and Europe to promote ShelterBox, a charity based in Cornwall. Now on the final leg of their mammoth journey, the couple are due to arrive in Fishguard on Wednesday 13th July. From there, they continue via Haverfordwest, Saundersfoot, Llanelli, Gower and Cardiff – giving a number of talks to Rotary Clubs along the way. They will be in Llanelli on Friday July 15. Llanelli Rotary Club's demonstration of a ShelterBox attracted a lot of interest during the Rotary Day show staged at the St Elli Centre in Llanelli. The ShelterBox is a key aid package for disaster zones, such as the one currently being tackled in Japan. "It is a fine example of how the Rotary movement works, not just locally, but on a global scale to help people in disasters such as the earthquake and tsunami in Japan," said Llanelli Rotary Club's press officer Robert Lloyd. "It is on occasions like this that Rotary's international spirit comes the fore. In the Haiti earthquake the ShelterBox project was deployed to ease suffering. Now, once again, it is being used in Japan. "Rotary works very closely with the ShelterBox charity to make sure the aid gets to the areas where it is most needed. Llanelli Rotary Club is doing its bit to promote the ShelterBox project this week. ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide. This week is designated Big Green Box Week in the UK and Llanelli Rotary’s Roger Stephens is happy to talk to anyone about what the project does. “ShelterBox is an extremely valuable tool in the response to international disasters and Llanelli Rotary was able to send its very own ShelterBox to the recent disaster in Haiti,” said Mr Stephens, who is chairman of Llanelli Rotary’s Foundation charity committee. “Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and essential equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless.
