Aberystwyth University students will be encouraging children and young people to get creative in a series of practical art workshops at the National Library of Wales between 22 and 25 February 2017. The workshops explore the legends of Wales and tales of ancient heroes, mystery and magic, with sessions on making masks, working with clay, painting and creating self-portraits. There will also be a session dedicated to the mysterious world of the Aztec. Developed around the theme ‘We are Legends’, the week’s activities build on Visit Wales’ ‘Year of Legends’ campaign and have been devised by a team of volunteer students on the University’s Museum & Gallery Education and Interpretation module. Aberystwyth University is launching a new strategy and vision for its Welsh medium provision. The Welsh Medium Academic Plan will be launched at 6pm tonight, Monday 5 December 2016 in Medrus, Penbryn, at the start of the annual Pantycelyn Christmas Dinner for Welsh students. It’s the most comprehensive strategy of its kind to be drawn up by any university in Wales. It lists in a single document the University's priorities for its Welsh medium provision, and reinforces Aberystwyth’s commitment to promoting the language and culture. As part of the plan, the University will hand out pledge cards to all students who choose to study through the medium of Welsh. Students at Aberystwyth University have created a collection of 19 short films which document different aspects of life in Ceredigion. The films have been produced by second year students on the Creative Documentary module at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies. The five-minute-long films will be shown for the first time in a special screening evening held in the R Gerallt Jones Studio at the Parry-Williams Building on Penglais Campus on Monday 12 December, starting at 6pm. Among the topics covered is a portrait of a young farmer from Llandysul; the history of the Davies family that runs the Commodore Cinema in Aberystwyth, and a look at the work done at the National Library to protect treasures during the Second World War. Some of West Wales’ brightest students are being helped to shine through the Seren initiative. Seren is a network of regional hubs designed to support Wales’ brightest sixth formers achieve their academic potential and gain access to leading universities. The launch of this year’s Seren Hub for Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire year 12 pupils is taking place later this week at Parc y Scarlets. Around 300 students from schools in the two counties, and from Coleg Sir Gar and Pembrokeshire College, will attend the event. Keynote speakers, workshops, information about Seren Hub developments and an opportunity to ask questions are all on the agenda. Around a dozen universities from England and Wales will also be in attendance. Seren was launched two years ago by the Welsh Government to tackle the decline in Welsh applications and admissions to Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
