The announcement by Welsh Government Economy, Science and Transport Minister Edwina Hart of new peak hourly train services between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury has been welcomed by Aberystwyth University Vice-Chancellor, Professor April McMahon. Passenger satisfaction with train companies in Wales has dropped below 50 per cent. A new survey reveals by Which? reveals First Great Western scored a satisfaction rating of 45 per cent, while Arriva Trains Wales had a score of 48 per cent. The survey conducted in November sought views from 7,415 adults, and also showed more than one quarter of commuters experienced a delay on their last train journey. If you have a Concessionary Travel Pass issued by Carmarthenshire County Council you are able to travel on the Heart of Wales Line rail services free of charge until March 31, 2014. Simply show the pass when you book. Journeys must start or finish at a Welsh station. County executive board member for transport services Cllr Colin Evans said: “Here is a glorious chance for those with concessionary travel passes to have a great day out and visit the wonderful towns and villages of mid and west Wales.” County leisure services executive board member Cllr Meryl Gravell said she had heard there were groups of men and women from Llanelli and further west enjoying “last Days of Summer Wine” excursions and regaling humorous tales of their many entertaining day-long free travel experiences. Concessionary Travel Passes are available to elderly and disabled residents of the county. Application forms are available at local post offices.

Boost to Chepstow train services (From South Wales Argus) A new direct train service will link Monmouthshire with destinations in west Wales. Arriva Trains Wales announced the new route which will see trains travelling from Chepstow, Caldicot and Severn Tunnel Junction to and from Llanelli, Carmarthen and Fishguard. The direct route will run every day, with one train in each direction.
