Children at Carmarthen’s Peniel Primary School have spiced up their lunchtime with the spirit of India to mark a very important event in the Hindu and Sikh calendar. Diwali is a five-day festival marked with lights and the giving and receiving of gifts. Pupils have been learning all about Diwali, and other cultures and traditions of India, as part of their studies, and asked Carmarthenshire’s Catering Service to lay on a special meal as part of the celebration. Kitchen staff were pleased to cook a delicious homemade Chicken Korma with rice, peas and sweetcorn and Naan bread, followed by fruit yoghurt and raisins. Catering Services Manager Sandra Weigel, said: “The school has been studying Indian culture through the curriculum and wanted to celebrate the event during their lunchtime. “We were more than happy to oblige, and are pleased that the event was such a success.”

Motorists caught speeding past Peniel Primary School had red faces when they had to explain their carelessness to the pupils themselves. Some drivers are so embarrassed they prefer not to put themselves through the ordeal and accept a fixed penalty notice. The Speeding Initiative outside schools throughout the county is being promoted as part of Carmarthenshire's Community Safety Partnership. Officers from Carmarthenshire County Council's Road Safety unit teamed up with Carmarthen North Neighbourhood Policing team and pupils from Peniel School to target speeding drivers. The aim of the campaign is to educate drivers and raise awareness of the impact that speeding vehicles have on local communities, and the objective is to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured each year on the roads in Carmarthenshire. Pupils at Peniel School have designed their own posters to encourage people to pick up their litter. It follows a visit at the end of last term from Eco Eli, the council’s eco-friendly mascot, along with local member Councillor Pam Palmer. The school’s Eco Committee had written to Councillor Palmer because they were concerned about the amount of litter in the village, in particular cigarette ends and dog mess. Councillor Palmer and council education and awareness and environmental enforcement officers went along to the Green Flag school to talk to the pupils and it was decided to hold a poster competition. There were four winners overall - Manon James, Jack Green, Lowri Joyner and Taryn Williams - and Councillor Palmer provided the prizes. Their posters will also be on display on litter bins throughout the village.
