The latest ‘Sporting Lunch’ hosted by the West Wales Committee of Sports Aid Wales at the Royal Ivy Bush Hotel in Carmarthen was a huge success. It featured Jim Mills, a living legend in the worlds of Rugby Union and Rugby League. Mills, a former Wales, Widnes and GB Ruby League star, delighted an audience of nearly 200 at the Ivy Bush with tales of his life on and off the rugby pitch. David Butler, chairman of the West Wales committee of Sports Aid, said afterwards: “Without a shadow of a doubt, Jim Mills is one of the finest speakers we’ve had at our regular dinners. He gave us a fabulous and very amusing insight into his colourful career.” The West Wales committee of Sports Aid Cymru Wales has raised more than £16,000 for the charity this year. Proceeds from a fund-raising memorial dinner for Carmarthen sportsman Keith Cobain have been presented to Sports Aid Cymru Wales. Mr Cobain's widow Barbara presented a cheque for more than £11,000, which represented half of the sum raised at the Keith Cobain Dinner held at Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli. The other half of the money is going to the Friends of Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen. The cheque was received by Ron Jones, director and secretary of Sports Aid Cymru Wales. Mr Jones, captain of Britain's athletics team at the 1968 Mexico Olympics and a veteran of three Olympics, paid tribute to Mr Cobain as a passionate supporter of sport in Carmarthenshire and Wales. He added that the money would go towards the establishment of a new Sports Aid Cymru Wales award in memory of Keith Cobain.

Clay Shaw Butler director David Butler met one of his sporting heroes - the legendary Welsh sprinter Ron Jones. Mr Jones was in Carmarthen for a SportsAid lunch held at The Ivy Bush Royal Hotel, Carmarthen. Mr Butler, director of Clay Shaw Butler, is the vice-chairman of the Carmarthen branch of the SportsAid Wales charity. He presented a cheque for £5000, on behalf of SportsAid Carmarthen, to Mr Jones. SportsAid Wales has supported some of the nation's most successful athletes of all time, including Nicole Cooke who brought home gold from the Beijing Olympic Games. The charity holds regular fundraising events and lunches and is keen to work more closely with local businesses and organisations to help the next generation of sporting heroes who hail from Wales to achieve their potential. The executive chairman of Llanelli media group Tinopolis, Ron Jones, has been appointed chair of a private sector panel which will help shape the Welsh Assembly Government’s support to the creative industries sector.
