Carmarthenshire County Council’s Chairman is urging local residents to back the British Legion Poppy Appeal. Chair Cllr Eryl Morgan is supporting the Poppy Appeal and has agreed that poppies can be placed in council premises. The Interim Head of the Poppy Appeal Shane Crowhurst said: “The Poppy Appeal currently stands at just over £44m and is almost on a par with last year’s record breaking increase. This is an incredible testament to the public’s generosity. “Our welfare services vary and for just a small donation of £5 we can install a handrail for someone who has been badly injured. A collective donation of £80,000 will ensure a complete refurbishment of a bedroom at one of our many Poppy Homes. “We spend millions of pounds on welfare each week and the number of our beneficiaries is growing annually due to recent conflicts.” This year Remembrance falls from October 29 until November 13. Carmarthenshire County Council is urging local residents to support the British Legion Poppy Appeal on the centenary of the First World War. Council Chair Cllr Daff Davies has offered the council’s support to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and agreed that poppies can be placed in council premises. The Head of the Poppy Appeal Ray Sheppard said: “In this Centenary year of World War One we are ever mindful of the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces and the demands on our services are as important now as they were then. “Our welfare services this year have seen over £1.7m a week spent on a variety of services. From helping a young widow through an inquest to ensuring that an older veteran can stay independent in their own home.” Last year’s Poppy Appeal currently stands at just over £38m. The Royal British Legion Charity Gala Concert will be staged at The Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen on Saturday, October 19. It will feature Cantorion Colin Jones (the Colin Jones singers), The Siren Sisters and The 215 City of Swansea Squadron Corps of Drums. The driving force behind the concert is Cerith Owens, the director of Loud Applause Productions, a firm which devotes a lot of energy to charitable causes. “This annual gala event is always one of the highlights of the year and was a sell-out at the Lyric last year, helping to give the poppy appeal a big boost. “The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal is a cause very dear to all our hearts and I hope the people of Carmarthenshire and beyond lend their support to such a worthy charity.” The evening will close with a poignant ‘Tribute to the Fallen’ with poppies falling into the auditorium.
