Metal thieves strike at disused school | Dyfed Powys Police | Heddlu Dyfed Powys Police are appealing for information after thieves broke in to a disused school in Brecon sometime between Friday 30th March and Thursday 12th April 2012 and stole an array of scrap metal. Libanus CP School has been unused for 6 years.

Metal Theft campaign yields rewards | Dyfed Powys Police | Heddlu Dyfed Powys Dyfed-Powys Police in Carmarthenshire have collaborated with partner agencies to take part in an enforcement and prevention initiative to combat Metal Theft. The campaign supported the National Metal Theft Week of Action and included road check operations, visits to scrap metal dealers and raising awareness with distribution of informative related literature. Metal theft is widely acknowledged as one of the fastest growing crime types in the UK and continues to be a national problem. This year it is estimated that it will cost the British economy £1 billion.

Pub targeted by metal theives | Dyfed Powys Police | Heddlu Dyfed Powys A public house in Llanelli has been targeted by thieves who’ve taken copper piping and a tank from inside the premises. The theft at the Royal Oak on Bryn happened some time between 5pm on Friday 20th January and 9.30am on Monday 23rd January.

Seven drain gratings have been stolen from an industrial estate in Llanelli over the weekend. Council leaders have hit out at those responsible as they say their reckless behaviour is putting the safety of road-users and pedestrians at risk. It will also cost the council almost £1,000 to replace them. The thefts occurred at the Dafen Industrial Estate. Council staff have made the area safe and are arranging for replacement gratings to be fitted as soon as possible. The incident has been reported to the police who are investigating. Residents are being asked to be vigilant and to report any suspicious or unusual activity, particularly outside of normal working hours. Executive board member for the Councillor Philip Hughes said: “Unfortunately manhole covers and drain gratings are stolen from time to time, probably for their scrap value. Six litter bins have been stolen from lay-bys along the A48 dual carriageway between Carmarthen and Cross Hands. It is believed the metal bins have been stolen for their scrap value. It will cost the council more than £1,500 to replace them. The bins have been placed at strategic locations to help reduce the amount of litter along the route. The thefts have been reported to the police. Chair of the Environment Scrutiny Committee Councillor Jim Jones said: “Thefts of this kind will not be tolerated and anyone caught stealing from the authority will be prosecuted. “The council is working hard to keep the county clean and resources are already stretched without this type of behaviour. Each bin costs £265 and that does not include the staff time in placing them out.” It is believed the bins were stolen sometime between August 23 and 25. Dyfed-Powys Police have been engaged in a special operation (codenamed Beagle) to combat scrap metal thefts in Carmarthenshire. The operation was planned as a direct result of a number of scrap metal thefts reported around the county, causing concern for police and other public bodies. In Carmarthenshire, records show 30 instances of metal theft since February 1st 2010. These have included thefts of gates from the Llandeilo area, farming equipment from Tycroes and copper and lead from several addresses in Llanelli. In the current economic climate, it’s widely recognised that the value of scrap metal items has increased, and there is concern among Carmarthenshire residents that people dealing in scrap metal may be using this as a guise, calling unannounced at addresses and helping themselves to items without prior knowledge or agreement from the legitimate owner.
