The Household Waste Recycling Centre at Llangadog is to remain open. The council’s waste and recycling section has met with AWS Ltd, which runs the site on its behalf, and has agreed that it shall remain open for the next 12 months. The contract for the recycling centre at Llangadog was due to come to an end on March 31 and as a result the authority took the opportunity to look at the provision of household waste recycling centres in Carmarthenshire as part of a review of its overall waste strategy. Director of Technical Services Richard Workman said: “We are delighted that following discussions with AWS we have been able to reach a decision to keep the household waste recycling centre at Llangadog open. “I hope householders will continue to use the recycling centre and help us to reach future recycling targets set by Welsh Government.” Last year, the county achieved a 54% recycling rate, exceeding Wales’s first statutory recycling target of 52%. Major strengthening works are being carried out to a Llangadog bridge. The works to the Carreg Sawdde Bridge started on Monday (July 1) and are being carried out by TRJ (Betws) Ltd on behalf of Carmarthenshire County Council. The C2146 road will be closed to traffic for the duration of the work; however pedestrian access will be maintained at the site with a temporary footbridge. The duration of the contract is 30 weeks, although there will be a two week shutdown at Christmas, taking the overall scheme to 32 weeks. The road is due to reopen to traffic on February 7, 2014. The project, which is costing more than half a million pounds, will see the replacement of the existing sub-standard bridge deck, which is currently subject to a 7.5 tonne weight limit. The existing abutments and piers will remain, although they will be modified to accommodate the new deck. A Horse and Pony Trust based in Llangadog has been given a grant through Carmarthenshire County Council to help it develop its good work. The local authority has awarded the Lluest Horse and Pony Trust £2,000 from the Welsh Church Fund. The Trust is a registered charity established in 1985. It is an equine rescue and rehabilitation centre with 140 horses and ponies registered in the care of the Trust, 100 of which are in approved homes, while 40 are cared for and stabled at its base at Beili Bedw Farm, Llanddeusant, Llangadog, in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The Trust provides specialist rehabilitation and training, and also monitors and addresses welfare issues across the industry such as standards at markets and indiscriminate breeding. The trust work closely with other agencies such as Career Wales, The probation Service, Coleg Elidyr, Interplay and Forest Lodge. Farmers' Union of Wales life member John Price, who died last summer, will be remembered every year when a cup presented by the union's county branch in his memory will be awarded at Gwynfe Show in Carmarthenshire. Mr Price, of Ddafadfa Isaf, Gwynfe, near Llangadog, was chairman of the show when he died, aged 72, at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen, on Tuesday July 6 2010. He ran a 144-acre hill farm where he kept beef cattle and sheep and rented 66 acres of land with grazing rights on the Black Mountain. After leaving school in 1953, he worked on the family farm with his late father until 1968 when he went to assist with the running of the Earl of Ducie's estate in South Gloucestershire. He returned to Ddafadfa Isaf in 1981. After serving as club chairman of Gwynfe YFC in 1960 and secretary of the East Carmarthen Lamb Group, he started taking part in FUW activities in 1983 when he became Carmarthenshire county delegate on the union's national livestock, wool and marts co...

Llangadog Post Office is being given a facelift thanks to a grant from the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013. The post office and newsagents in Church Street, Llangadog, has been given a Village Improvement Grant (VIG) of £8,538 towards the estimated £17,471 cost of the project to refurbish the shopfront in a traditional style. The work will include replacing the aluminium windows and door with hardwood and re-rendering the property. This grant has been made under the Village Enhancement Project, which has received funding of £940,049 through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007 – 2013, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural fund for Rural Development. The project aims to enhance the appearance of rural towns and villages and stimulate economic growth. The VIG itself is aimed to enhance the branding of commercial properties in rural areas. An exhibition to celebrate 10 years of achievement by the Llandovery and Llangadog Townscape Heritage Partnership Committee has been held in Llangadog. The exhibition at Llangadog Community Centre was intended to build upon the momentum that has seen both towns transformed over the decade, since the introduction of the Townscape Heritage Initiative. The event was officially opened by Mr Dan Clayton Jones, Deputy Chairman of NHMF and HLF and Chairman of the HLF Committee for Wales, and members of the Partnership, including representatives from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Carmarthenshire County Council, Cadw, Welsh Assembly Government and other conservation organisations and professional bodies offered their expertise and advice on good property maintenance.
