Secondary school pupils across Carmarthenshire can meet potential employers - and take selfies with international rugby referee Nigel Owens at the same time. A Careers Wales Convention is being held to give all secondary schools in Carmarthenshire the opportunity to discuss recruitment opportunities. Around 70 employers will attend the event, taking place at Parc y Scarlets on Tuesday, March 15. The convention is being organised by Careers Wales in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council and Coleg Sir Gar, with support from the Welsh Government’s Grant Bwrw Mlaen 2015/16. International rugby referee Nigel Owens will also be in attendance to help promote the benefits of bilingual qualifications, in order to improve customer service in particular in the Welsh speaking communities of Carmarthenshire. Tickets are selling fast for the Carmarthenshire Sports Personality Awards 2014 when 12 of the county’s top sporting heroes will be crowned winners next Friday. A full house is expected to turn out at Y Ffwrnes Theatre which plays host to the annual sporting talent event on January 30. Thirty six finalists will take their seats ahead of the 12 awards winners being announced as well as the Hall of Fame award which goes to rugby legends the late Ray Gravell and Stuart Gallacher. Categories include sports personality, young sportsman and sportswoman, disabled sportsman and sportswoman, sports coach, sports volunteer, young volunteer, team of the year, young team of the year, community sport coach, high performance coach and the Ryan Jones Memorial Award for outstanding services to sport. In its 17th year the event recognises the sporting achievements of athletes, coaches and volunteers across Carmarthenshire. The Dan Collins Memorial Rugby Match raised a staggering £11,078 for Healing The Wounds, the Welsh PTSD charity. The event was organised by soldier's mum Deana Collins. Deana's son Dan tragically lost his life on New Year's Day 2012. With the help of Deana's friends and Dan's mates from the Welsh Guards, the Dan Collins Memorial Rugby Match kicked off at Cardigan Rugby Club, with the Healing The Wounds charity's Patron, Nigel Owens, giving his time to kindly referee the match. The day turned out to be very warm and sunny with lots of supporters young and old joining the fun and a fabulous day was had by everyone. A delicious barbecue was available and Healing the Wounds Mascot 'Dylan Draig' made a welcome appearance that added to the fun theme of the day. A fund-raising auction was also held.
