Builders merchants help tree sparrows with nesting boxes

Image
LBS Builders Merchants are helping a local British Trust for Ornithology volunteer to provide vital nesting boxes for one of the county’s rarest breeding birds. The tree sparrow may be mistaken for its more common cousin the house sparrow (tree sparrows have a distinctive brown cap and black spot on their cheeks) but the Tywi Valley now appears to host the largest population in Wales of this ‘red-listed’ species. The tree sparrows do not wander far from the valley floodplain. Here, around the still or slow-flowing water found on the floodplain, they can find the preferred insects that adults feed to the young during the summer. Nest boxes at key sites will benefit the tree sparrows, helping to supplement their preferred nesting sites in tree cavities, and provide a good opportunity to ring and monitor the birds. The project is being run by Charlie Sargent, who is a member of the Teifi Ringing group and a BTO licensed bird ringer. Outside the breeding season, tree sparrows are depende...

Latest news from Aberglasney House and Gardens in the Tywi Valley -  Image by Nigel McCall Head Gardener's Update The winter collections at Aberglasney are just coming to their best. Snowdrops are appearing throughout the Gardens as one would expect. There are also excellent displays of early flowering Narcissus such as the renowned ‘Cedric Morris’ and the even earlier 'Rijnveld's Early Sensation' which is mass planted in a two thousand strong drift. One of the best partners for these bulbs is the Hellebore of which we have many types throughout the Gardens. There are mass planted drifts of the famous ‘Helen Ballard Strain’ and more recently a collection of the exciting ‘Harvington’ strains which have very clear colours from white to black or even spotted which are a favourite of visitors. Over the last two years we have tried many new Helleborus such as ‘Anna’s Red’ which are created with an exciting new method of propagation called micropropagation or Tissu...

Work starts on ambitious Tywi Valley Path

Image
Work has started on a section of the multi-million-pound and picturesque Tywi Valley Path. The first phase of works have taken place between Fronun and Bwlch Bach, near the concrete works in Abergwili, and will form part of the planned 16-mile route linking Carmarthen and Llandeilo through the scenic Tywi Valley countryside. The works included drainage and widening of the existing carriageway for approximately 1km, with some road markings and signage still to be carried out, and were paid for thanks to a Local Transport Fund grant from Welsh Government. The remainder of the path will be all off the highway and will follow an almost adjacent route to that of the River Tywi, linking in with major tourist attractions and generating between £860,000 and £2million in the local economy every year. It will also give people a sustainable and healthy travel option, linking with villages between the two main towns. Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “I am delight...
