Ben Hughes Engineering Ltd started trading in 2004 after a buy out from Ben Hughes Loughor Foundry, established in 1864. Over the last three years, the volume of work has increased to the point where capacity was reached at their site in Loughor. Although their main office remains at the original premises along the banks of the Loughor Estuary, the company has now expanded into additional premises in Hendy. Statistics released today by the Higher Education Statistics Agency show a significant improvement in the employability performance indicator for Aberystwyth University. The percentage of Aberystwyth University full-time first degree leavers (i.e. full time undergraduate when they were studying at Aberystwyth), who are in work or further study or both, has risen from 85.5% (12/13 statistics) to 91.4% in the Destinations of Leavers of Higher Education Survey 2013/14. While this step-change is against a background of rising employability for new graduates UK-wide and in Wales – up 1 percentage point - Aberystwyth University has improved well above the national trend with a 6 percentage point increase. In addition, the proportion of employed Aberystwyth University graduates gaining graduate-level employment has risen at an even greater rate – 9 percentage points up over the last year. Unemployment continues to fall in Carmarthenshire with a recorded drop of over 26% for the past year. Latest figures reveal a fall in claimants for Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) of 26% in the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr area; of 25.9% in Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire; and 24.3% in Llanelli. The statistics issued by the Department for Work and Pensions show a steady reduction in unemployment from March 2014 to March 2015, at 26.3% down over the year. It fell by 2.2% from February to March with the biggest drop recorded in the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr area of 6.6%. There are currently 2,166 JSA claimants in the county, of these 1,389 are male and 777 female, a total of 1.9% of the population in Carmarthenshire. The highest number of people unemployed – some 955 - are in the age category 25 to 44. The Lift Programme in Carmarthenshire is launching an innovative new initiative to give its clients key employability skills and a boost their chances of finding paid work. The employment and training programme, which is funded by the Welsh Government and works with individuals from workless households within Communities First areas, will be opening its new Market stall within Llanelli Indoor Market. The stall will operate every Thursday and will be providing supported work placements to two Lift clients every week. During this time they will undergo a structured four-week programme where they will learn key retail skills. Two young people have been taken on by a Llanelli shop thanks to the Communities First Jobs Growth Wales scheme. Jonathan Armstrong, owner of Emilia May Gifts in the St. Elli Shopping Centre, Llanelli, is one of a number of local employers who have taken advantage of the scheme by recruiting two new members of staff – Kayleigh Brown and Larissa Parton - with the help of Hannah Evans, Jobs Growth Wales mentor for Communities First . The scheme offers young people aged 16-24 full time job opportunities, paid at national minimum wage for a period of six months. The Welsh Government provides funding to local employers for 26 weeks for giving young people the opportunity to gain good quality work experience within their business. Fracking in Wales could threaten far more jobs than it’s likely to create, new analysis [1] of a recent UK Government report [2] has revealed. Study of the Government report by environment charity Friends of the Earth Cymru has shown that, at its peak, a shale gas industry is likely to create just 240 jobs for the people of Wales, mostly in low-skilled, low-paying employment. Even this peak period of maximum employment will only last four years, after which employment will rapidly decline. The UK and Welsh Governments have also admitted there has been no assessment of the impact fracking could have on employment in other sectors, such as renewable energy, agriculture and tourism, despite concerns raised by unions and industry representatives. More than 100,000 people are currently employed in these sectors in Wales.
