The funeral of the man who was recognised as ‘The Voice’ of Parc y Scarlets, Stradey Park and Stebonheath will be held on Friday (April 17). Tributes to Monro Walters have been pouring in since his sudden death on Saturday, March 28. “His family have been very moved by the loving tributes that have been paid to Monro,” said his friend Robert Lloyd. “They would like to express their gratitude to everyone. The tributes to Monro have given them strength to get through this very difficult period.” Mr Walters was 69. He lived in Pwll. He is survived by his wife Maxine and children Gethin, Rhys and Rhiannon. The funeral on Friday April 17, takes the form of a public service at Greenfield Chapel, 11am, followed by private burial at Holy Trinity Church, Pwll at 12.30pm. “We are expecting a large crowd of mourners at the funeral as we say our farewells to Monro, a man universally acknowledged in Llanelli as a gentleman and all-round ‘good guy’,” said Mr Lloyd. Carmarthenshire Councillors have decided that they are minded to approve an application to give developers three more years to submit detailed plans for housing at Stradey Park, Llanelli. But the Welsh Government has issued a Stopper Notice preventing the release of the decision until it has had time to consider whether or not to call in the application to make the final decision itself. A spokesman for the developers said work would start on site in three weeks time and the application was to provide them with the option to make changes to house types at a later stage. Last week's meeting of the planning committee considered an application by the developers for variation of one of the conditions of the outline planning permission to extend the outline planning time limit by a further three years for up to 450 residential units of two, three and four-bedroom detached houses, terraced houses, terraced town houses and apartments. Award-winning South Wales architects the Lewis Partnership Ltd are helping Llanelli Tennis and Squash Club serve up new facilities. The club has applied for a £300,000 grant to upgrade its clubhouse and facilities. Club chairman Mark Westcott hopes planning permission and grant money for the project will be in place by November. Work could then start by February or March. Mr Westcott said: “It is still difficult to put a definitive timescale on it. We are still in the early stages.” Based at world famous Stradey Park, the volunteer-run club runs tennis coaching programmes and mini, junior and adult teams. The Jenkins Bakery of Llanelli sponsored the cricket match between Llanelli First XI and Aberdare CC at Stradey Park, Llanelli. The match, in Division Two of the South Wales Cricket Association, saw Aberdare bat first and win by 79 runs. The Court of Appeal has thrown out the application for a Judicial Review into the building of homes at Stradey Park. The plans by Taylor Wimpey for 355 homes on the site can now proceed, bringing with them much needed construction jobs and housing. Carmarthenshire County Council approved the plans some time ago, after campaigners lost their appeal to the Welsh Government to intervene. They then continued their fight and applied for a Judicial Review which has caused lengthy delays to the scheme. Chief Executive Mark James said: “The council is pleased to see that the Court of Appeal has upheld the fact that the process we followed was quite right and proper. “This has been an unnecessary waste of time and money, and we shall be seeking to recover our costs on behalf of the council taxpayers of Carmarthenshire. A housing development on the site of Llanelli’s former Stradey Park rugby ground is now free to go ahead following a High Court ruling. A Judicial Review claim was issued last year from a protestor arguing that the council had been in breach of environmental regulations and other points relating to planning matters. Reserved matters were approved by the council following outline planning permission previously granted by the Welsh Assembly following a Public Inquiry on the site. His Honour Judge Milwyn Jarman QC, sitting as a Judge of the High Court, considered the case on Monday, January 16, and gave judgement at a further hearing on Friday (January, 20, 2012). He dismissed all four challenges brought against Carmarthenshire County Council by Mr Thomas Hughes, a cockle picker of Llanrhidian, Gower.
