Withybush Hospital’s new £7.8m renal unit is now complete and will be opened to patients in the summer. The 21-station, state of the art renal unit was built and completed on schedule by the University Health Board at the Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, hospital on behalf of the Welsh Renal Network. The Welsh Renal Network is responsible for appointing renal service providers and negotiations are in final stages with the contract award expected by the end of May 2014. County Director and commissioner, Sue Lewis said: “The new renal unit is a major investment at Withybush Hospital and contains all the latest technology expected in a modern renal dialysis unit. Renal patients have been given a tour of their new unit at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. The new £7.5million 21 bay state of the art Renal Dialysis Unit is set to open in February 2014. Two groups of patients and their families were able have a first viewing inside the building and the progress made. Alex Cottrell, visitor to the new renal unit said: “The new Renal Unit looked excellent when we visited it. “It really benefits other patients. I attended the meetings beforehand and we were really listened to and involved. They have listened to the patients and how they feel in the environment they are treated in. “The design and presentation have all been taken into account and things like having the nurses station in the middle makes a difference. “Even down to the colours and the beach theme which all makes a difference when you are there for up to five hours being treated.” Project lead, Martin Thomas, said: “The building work on the unit is progressing well, it ...

The steel structure for the new renal unit at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, is now up. Work started on the new £7.5million 21 bay state of the art Renal Dialysis Unit in the summer and is progressing to schedule with doors opening to its first patents in February 2014. This new unit will remove the need for patients to travel out of Pembrokeshire to receive Dialysis treatment. The car parking facilities at the hospital have also been developed as part of the project with an increase in patient, staff and disabled parking spaces. Patients are being advised that a programme of refurbishment and preparation work for the construction of Withybush Hospital’s new renal unit is due to start on site within the next few weeks. Award-winning construction company Interserve has been appointed to carry out the programme of enabling works and patients will see the hoardings put up at the front of the hospital shortly. As part of the refurbishment work plans are being put in place to create a dedicated stroke and rehabilitation unit. Interim County Director for Pembrokeshire Mark Brandreth said: “This is the start of a very exciting time for the development of services in Pembrokeshire.
