The digger moves in to the Llanelli Railway Goods Shed site

THE Digger moved in to the Llanelli Railway Goods Shed site in Marsh Street, Llanelli, for some early site clearance works. The mechanical excavator was needed to clear bushes, shrubs and undergrowth from the site as work continued to assess the area, “It wasn’t the start of any proper work on site,” said Llanelli railway Goods Shed Trust secretary Richard Roper. “It was, instead, some very practical work to find out more about what was lying underneath all the shrubs, brambles and other material. “We were grateful for the cooperation of Network Rail to carry out the works - and we were also very grateful to Parker Plant Hire for lending us the digger. “As we move forward with plans for the site, we were keen to get a better appraisal of the land around the site. “Pulling the digger in allowed us to get a better appraisal of the old road, path and railway line structures, other pieces of platform and other outlying buildings. “The site is a fascinating one to explo...

Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway heritage plans progressing

Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway is progressing with plans for a heritage centre plus demonstration steam and diesel railway. The long term aim of the company, based in Cynheidre, is to provide a successful tourist attraction, which will benefit the whole area. President Cllr Tegwen Devichand and Carmarthenshire County Council regeneration director Dave Gilbert paid a recent visit to the site. Cllr Devichand said: “I invited Mr Gilbert to come and see our plans, and the good progress we are making. “We welcomed his views and advice, and look forward to inviting him back at some point in the future. “Making this a successful attraction would not only benefit local people and preserve an historic service, but would attract visitors to the county, bringing with them economic benefits for the whole area.” Formed in 1999, LMMR consists of volunteers who give their time freely to help the project.
