Nominations are now open for the annual Brin Isaac sports awards. The event, which has six categories, looks to reward local talent for excelling in sporting activities. Categories include the Brin Isaac Trophy — sportsperson of the year; Walter Hughes Cup — senior runner-up; Star Cup — junior sportsperson of the year; Stradey Centenary Cup — junior runner-up; Kelly Evans Shield — services to sport; W Jack Hughes Cup — coach of the year. The Brin Isaac Memorial Fund remembers the late Brin Isaac, who gave such splendid service to young men through the YMCA, boxing, scouting and many other activities and endeavours. The winner of last year's main award was Manchester City footballer Emyr Huws. The 19-year-old midfielder, dubbed by some as the next Aaron Ramsey, followed the likes of Phil Bennett, Robert Croft, Derek Quinnell, Stephen Jones and the winner for the previous two years, Olympian Dai Greene, on the Brin Isaac roll of honour. The annual Brin Isaac Memorial dinner takes place this evening at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli. Tonight's award-winners have already been announced - European and Commonwealth champion David Greene is the outstanding winner of the 2010 Brin Isaac Llanelli sportsman of the year award. Greene, one of the leading 400m hurdlers in world athletics, stormed to gold in Barcelona and Delhi to cap an incredible 12 months. The former Coedcae pupil also won the Continental Cup in Split, running a new personal best of 47.88 to become the second fastest British 400m hurdler of all time. Runner-up to Greene and the winner of the Walter Hughes Cup is gymnast Alex Rothe. The 17-year-old was another to wear the Welsh vest in the Commonwealth Games, finishing fifth in the team and individual pommel horse event. Reds Academy Director Bob Jeffrey has won the prestigious W. Jack Hughes Coach of the Year Award and will receive the trophy at tonight's annual Brin Isaac Awards at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli. Bob has won the award as recognition for his work at the Reds Academy and guiding the Under 19s to The Championship, League Cup and Welsh Youth Cup titles last season.
