Residents in Newcastle Emlyn are being urged to have a New Year clear out A waste and tyre amnesty is being held in the mart car park on Tuesday, January 19 between 8am and 1pm. Most household waste can be taken along including unwanted furniture, carpets and mattresses, electrical items such as fridge-freezers and televisions, as well as black and blue bags. A maximum of four tyres can also be disposed of; however, tractor or lorry tyres will not be accepted. Hazardous waste such as paint, fluorescent tubes, batteries, chemicals, gas bottles and asbestos will not be accepted along with glass, garden waste, trade waste, construction waste and agricultural waste. A total of 1,187 tyres have been collected to date from four recent waste amnesty events around Carmarthenshire. The events have been held in Newcastle Emlyn, Pencader, Llanybydder and Burry Port. Other unwanted items taken along by residents included 4.56 tonnes of large white electrical goods eg washing machines, fridges, freezers, cleaners etc. Of these events Newcastle Emlyn reached the highest overall recycling rate of 69%. The aim of the amnesties is to encourage people who may not live close to a recycling centre to dispose of their waste responsibly, reduce fly-tipping and increase recycling. Residents got rid of more than three tonnes of rubbish in an amnesty held in Ferryside. The council’s waste and recycling section organised the event to reduce fly-tipping and encourage people to recycle. Approximately 200 tyres were taken along as well as various electrical appliances, unwanted furniture and other general waste. Of all the waste collected, 60 per cent was able to be recycled.
