Llanelli Rotary Club is staging a ‘Celebrity Ladies Sleepover’ in one of the world-famous Shelterbox tents! The tents are designed for use in ‘disaster zones’ and have been airlifted into Japan and Haiti in recent years. “We have a tent which we use for demonstration purposes to show the people of Llanelli how Rotary is able to help in emergency situations in disaster zones,” said Melanie Carroll-Cliffe, President of Llanelli Rotary Club. “But we will be putting the tent to more pleasant use on Saturday, June 18, when we stage a ‘Celebrity Ladies Sleepover’ at Parc Elin Mair in Five Roads, Llanelli. “The club has picked some special ‘victims’, sorry ‘volunteers’, to spend a night in the Shelterbox tent. I will be there, along with fellow Rotarians Sue Roberts and Alison Evans, Llanelli MP Nia Griffith, Eleanor Marks, Director of the Communities Division with the Welsh Government, Stradey Park Hotel owner Angela Saunders and our Rotary District Governor Donna Wallbank.” There will be a ...

The newest member of Llanelli Rotary Club was officially inducted into membership at a meeting of the club at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli. Alison Evans was officially welcomed by club president Melanie Carroll-Cliffe, left. Midlands-born Alison has lived in Llanelli since 1977. She first came to the area while working for Ammanford-based Delanair. She progressed from graduate trainee to finance director with Delanair. Following the takeover by Valeo in 1989, she joined TRW Cam Gears in Resolven. Alison worked for TRW for 18 years, for much of that time in Birmingham. Most recently, she was chief finance officer for the Continental Europe region of the United Technologies Fire and Security business. She met husband Paul in Llanelli’s famous Glen Ballroom. The couple have one daughter, Sarah. Paul worked for Ina Bearings for 43 years. Sarah is employed by DW Training in Trostre. Llanelli Rotary Club President Melanie Carroll-Cliffe helped hand out the awards at the charity boxing dinner staged at the Diplomat Hotel, Llanelli. The evening was organised by Trostre Amateur Boxing Club and helped raise £3,000 for Llanelli Rotary's HARK appeal for a mobile audiology unit for Accra in Ghana. Llanelli schoolchildren have been helping the town’s Rotary Club with an ambitious project which will literally spring into life next February. ‘Focus on the Crocus’ is the name of an innovative Rotary project which is seeing thousands of crocus bulbs being planted in prominent locations. The mass-planting is part of a national campaign to publicise the international Rotary movement’s campaign to eradicate polio. “It is a massive project,” said Llanelli Rotary President Melanie Carroll-Cliffe. “In Llanelli, we are delighted the project has something of a prime spot in the gardens at the front of Llanelli Town Hall.” President Melanie was accompanied by 10 children from Pentip Church in Wales Primary school to plant the purple crocus bulbs in Town Hall Square. The gardener attached to the Town Hall, Tony Evans, has assured the Rotarians that when the crocus flowers bloom (hopefully in February) they will be a truly magnificent display. Llanelli Rotary Club president Melanie Carroll-Cliffe, pictured above and below, took part in the Marie Curie cancer charity Ladies Driving Challenge at the Pembrey Racing Circuit at the weekend. Lady drivers took on a selection of driving tasks in challenging vehicles – all in the name of charity. Melanie raised £450 in sponsorship from Llanelli Rotary Club for the Marie Curie charity. Llanelli Rotary Club was delighted to welcome the District Governor of the Rotary movement, Donna Wallbank, to its meeting held at the Stradey Park Hotel. Donna, who was accompanied by husband Steve, gave an inspirational address outlining the great strides Rotary has made internationally in attempting to eradicate polio. She also praised members of Llanelli Rotary Club – the second oldest in Wales – for their work in the local community. She also highlighted Llanelli Rotary’s £62,000 contribution to the Foundation charity, the international Rotary movement’s own charity fund. The vote of thanks to District Governor Donna was given by JC Williams, a past president of Llanelli Rotary Club and a former District Governor.
