Carmarthenshire County Council will invest £2million to deliver a new purpose-built base for the Carmarthenshire Archive Service. The council’s Executive Board today agreed to finance a new building at a preferred location, as an extension to the rear of Carmarthen Library. Executive Board members heard how bringing the archive service into the town centre would bring additional footfall to the King Street area of town, whilst adding to its ‘cultural quarter’ ethos. Several other sites had been considered, including Abergwili Museum and the Guildhall in Carmarthen, and Parc Howard in Llanelli. It is seen as a positive step forward for the archive service, which has been affected by an outbreak of mould at its present base in Parc Myrddin. Roman guests will be visiting the National Eisteddfod field in Llanelli during the first week in August. They will be there from 11am on Saturday, August 2 (attending from 11 – 4pm each day and 12noon - 5pm on Wednesday). As guests of the Friends of Carmarthenshire’s County Museum in Abergwili, they will be meeting and greeting visitors to the Hanes SirGar History stand. This stand (Number 409) will feature the story of the Romans in Carmarthenshire and a lively competition has been arranged for young visitors to the stand. In planning the display Museum Friends Chairman, David Grindrod said “From their splendid amphitheatre to their gold mining, the Romans made an enormous contribution to life in Carmarthenshire and their influence has echoed resonantly through the years. Our visiting Romans, in full toga, will be able to shed more light on what the County was like in Roman times and I am hoping that lots of people will be there to meet them”.
