Llantwit Major Rotarian Donald Carsley has received a special award at the House of Lords for his commitment to Rotary and community work. A former detective, Mr Carsley was among 12 previously unsung Rotarian heroes who were honoured by some of Britain’s top politicians in Whitehall. Presenting the Rotary Great Britain and Ireland (RGBI) Champions of Change Awards, was host for the evening the Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords, the Rt Hon Lord Wallace of Tankerness. He described Rotary as “a great movement” and said he had been very humbled to see the achievements of the 12 Awardees. Nominations for the awards were in two categories — domestic and international — and invited from across RGBI’s 29 Districts, which takes in 1,800 clubs and 50,000 members. Awardees projects ranged from improving education facilities in Kenya and Uganda and raising awareness of child slavery to organising disability sports events in Wales and peace events in Scotland and Jersey. The public speaking team from St John Lloyd School in Llanelli has won its way through to a prestigious national competition final. The team has been taking part in the Rotary Youth Speaks competition since January. The St John Lloyd trio of speakers won the Llanelli Rotary Club competition staged at Llanelli Town Hall and then went on to win the Intermediate team section at area, district and regional Rotary finals. They will now compete against teams from across Britain and Ireland in the final of the Rotary International Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) Youth Speaks final at Hull University on Sunday (April 28). Llanelli Rotary Club is delighted to welcome the current Rotary International Britain and Ireland (RIBI) President Jim Moulson to its weekly meeting at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli, this lunchtime. Jim and his family have had their home in Paisley, Scotland’s largest town, since 1972. The elder of his two daughters is married and he has two grandchildren – Lewis and Rebecca who are 12 years and 7 years old respectively. Jim was a policeman from 1967 until he retired from the superintending ranks of Strathclyde Police in September, 2000, to commit himself to his responsibilities as District Governor in 2001 - 2002. Apart from his family, Rotary has been Jim’s consuming interest since he became a member of the Rotary Club of Paisley Callants in 1984. He had the privilege and most enjoyable pleasure of being president in 1994/95, joined the district team as club service chairman in 1996, and was elected as an assistant governor in 1998.
