The kind-hearted lady golfers of the Ashburnham Championship Links Golf Club in Pembrey have raised £450 for a Llanelli children's home. The money was handed over Llys Caradog manager Marilyn Parry (left) by Iris Jacob, 2012 Ladies Captain at the Ashburnham. Iris said: "The lady golfers at the Ashburnham work very hard throughout the year to raise money for different charities. We were delighted to be able to lend our support to Llys Caradog and know that the money will be put to good use."

An evening with Maureen Madill, the BBC golf commentator, was a hit with the ladies of the Ashburnham Golf Club in Pembrey. The professional golf coach was the guest speaker at a special dinner to celebrate 100 years of ladies golf at 'The Ash'. "The evening was great fun and enjoyed by all," said club captain Iris Jacob. "More than 150 guests attended the celebration dinner at the Parc y Scarlets stadium in Llanelli. "It was great to see so many past members of the club and so many of our current members celebrating a milestone in the history of Ashburnham Golf Club." Guest speaker Madill was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. She won the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship in 1979 and the British Ladies Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 1980. There was a big reunion for lady members of The Ashburnham Championship Links Golf Club in Pembrey when the annual ladies dinner was held. "The dinner was attended by current members, but we'd also worked hard to get as many former members as possible to attend," said Ashburnham Ladies Captain Mrs Iris Jacob. "In the end, more than 50 people attended the dinner. We were delighted with the numbers as this year marks the centenary of ladies golf at 'The Ash'. "The dinner was a great success and it was great for current members and old members to get together and share their memories of playing this wonderful course." The next big event in the centenary year for the ladies will be 'An evening with Maureen Madill', a special dinner at Parc y Scarlets which will feature the popular golf commentator on Friday, October 12.

The Ladies Captain at The Ashburnham Championship Links Golf Club in Pembrey, near Llanelli, is appealing for old members to come forward to take part in an annual dinner. “This year is very important to us as it is the centenary of ladies golf at The Ashburnham,” said Mrs Iris Jacob. “I am busy going through old membership records and contact books to see if we can get as many members and former members as possible to attend the annual Ladies Captain Day dinner.” The dinner is being held at The Ashburnham Golf Club on Wednesday, August 8, starting at 7pm. Ladies captain Iris Jacob said: "It's just one of a number of ways we are marking the centenary of the formation of the ladies section at 'The Ash'. "The ladies section started in 1912, so we encouraged everyone playing in a special tournament to dress in 'period costume'. Ladies taking part in a special tournament to mark 100 years of women's golf at 'The Ash' will be teeing off in costumes from days gone by. Ladies captain Iris Jacob said: "It's just one of a number of ways we are marking the centenary of the formation of the ladies section at 'The Ash'. "The ladies section started in 1912, so we are encouraging everyone playing on Saturday to dress in 'period costume'. "It's up to the players themselves.They may choose to dress up in 1912 style, or they may chose something more contemporary like a 1970s theme. "Whatever they pick, it should be a colourful and entertaining event." The club recently held its first mixed foursomes of the season. There’s a new team at the helm at The Ashburnham Championship Links golf course in Pembrey. The new club captain is structural engineer Mel Williams. And the new ladies captain is Iris Jacob. Mr Williams, 69, has been playing at ‘The Ash’ for 53 years, since he was 16. “When I was brought up in Pembrey and most of the local boys in played golf as well as the traditional sports of rugby and cricket,” Mr Williams said. “I’m really looking forward to my year as club captain. The fellowship and the fun is great here and I am looking forward to all the competitions and activities planned for the year.” Ladies captain Mrs Jacob is a post office worker living in Pembrey. She started playing golf in 1994. She recalled: “I started playing on the advice of a friend. I’d just become a widow and she brought me down to ‘The Ash’ to try the game.
