The new President of Llanelli Rotary Club has held her first showpiece event of the year. Mrs Susan Roberts succeeded Hywel Bassett as President of Llanelli Rotary Club. She held her President's Night dinner at the Stradey Park Hotel. Honorary Rotarian Roy Noble, the celebrated BBC radio and television personality, was the guest speaker. Mrs Roberts has expressed her delight at taking over as club President and added that she was looking forward to a great year of community activities and fund-raising. Mrs Roberts was born in Llanelli and attended the old Llanelli Girls' Grammar School. After graduating in Institutional and Hotel Management, she went on to the King's Fund College for Officers (NHS) London as a management trainee. She spent three years based at the college in London and having practical work experience at a variety of hospitals throughout Wales. Carmarthenshire 50+ Forum has organised its most ambitious annual event ever after a successful year of recruitment. The Forum, which now has 1,750 members, is organising a Grand Day Out at the National Botanic Garden of Wales on Friday September 19 hosted by entertainer Roy Noble. The free event at the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Llanarthne includes guided walking tours around the Garden, a life-sized replica of Dylan Thomas’ Writing Shed, with interactive workshops that bring to life the working environment of the poet, iPad, arts and crafts, reflexology, patchwork and tea dance taster sessions, a mini crazy golf course, and information stalls from a wide range of local organisations and charities. There will also be local choirs and orchestras to add a musical feel to proceedings. The next fund-raising lunch for Sports Aid Cymru Wales in Carmarthen will be held on Friday, April 26. The guest speaker with be celebrated author and broadcaster Roy Noble MBE. The lunch, organised by the West Wales committee of Sports Aid Wales, starts at 1pm. Tickets are £25. There will be a raffle and auction and other sporting speakers. David Butler, president of the West Wales committee of Sports Aid Wales, said demand for tickets would be high.
