Residents in four Carmarthenshire communities are being asked for their views on proposals to create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists. The council is consulting on Safe Routes in Communities schemes for Whitland, Cwmamman, Pencader and Rhos, Saron and Pentre Cwrt. Display boards showing the details of the scheme will be put up in each of the areas so that people can leave feedback. The comments will form part of a bid to Welsh Government for funding for the schemes to be carried out next year in 2016-17. The council is also consulting directly with local schools, town and community councils and the local members. An Amman Valley schoolgirl received a huge surprise when Eco Eli and Dylan the Dragon turned up at her school with some special prizes for her. Nine-year-old Nia Davies from Saron Primary School won a hamper of fruit and compost bin for her family as well as a bag full of goodies in a competition held as part of a schools roadshow with the Gregory Brothers. The childrens’ entertainers hit the road earlier this year with Eco Eli, the council’s eco-friendly elephant, and Dylan the Dragon, the council’s healthy schools meals mascot to raise awareness of healthy living and the environment. A joint initiative by Carmarthenshire County Council’s street scene and catering services departments, the fun-packed show was performed to hundreds of Welsh language primary school children across the county. Eco Eli took to the stage to raise awareness of environmental issues such as recycling, saving energy and litter while Dylan spread the word on the importance of healthy eating and regular exercise...

Primary school pupils from Saron will be enjoying some more mature company as part of their project on care in the community. Saron CP School children will be visiting residents of the county council’s Llys Yr Ysgol Sheltered Complex, Saron, to chat and play games such as Snakes and Ladders, Connect 4, Top Trumps and dominoes. Their visit is all part of breaking down barriers between young and old, and sees the children visit the sheltered complex once a month to talk and play games with the tenants. It is hoped the visit will help improve relations between the two generations, as well as alleviate older people’s fear of youngsters and give young people a positive regard for older people.
