Many of you, will, like me, have been shocked, long before the events of this last week, at the appalling tragedy of refugees dying on the shores of Europe and very disturbed at the negative attitude of some politicians and some sectors of the press. I know that many people like you in the UK would want to offer a welcome to refugees after the unimaginable hardship they have suffered, and will already have contributed through organisations like Christian Aid and Oxfam to the work that they are doing, both in the countries neighbouring the areas of conflict, and on the shores of Southern Europe. It was encouraging that the press on Friday printed Christian Aid’s call for the UK to take more refugees. People in Carmarthenshire are being reminded that they need to be registered to be able to vote in the forthcoming General Election. It will be held on Thursday, May 7, and there are a number of different ways people can vote. Which elections residents can vote in depends on their nationality. If they are a British or Commonwealth citizen living in the UK, they can vote in all elections in Carmarthenshire. If they are a European Union citizen, they can vote in Local and European Parliamentary elections, but not General Parliamentary elections. People who have moved recently or are not registered to vote, need to complete an application form either online or apply to the elections office by no later than Monday, April 20. Those who require a postal vote for this election, must complete and send an application to the Acting Returning Officer by no later than 5pm on Tuesday, April 21. The Tower Brewery in Burton on Trent raised a glass of its popular Tower Bitter at the seat of Government recently after local MP Andrew Griffiths chose its beer as the week’s guest ale in the Strangers’ Bar, sited inside the House of Commons. Côr Meibion Llanelli continued their 50th anniversary celebrations with a special concert at Parliament in Westminster, London. The choristers were invited to sing before a select VIP audience by Llanelli MP Nia Griffith. The MP treated the choristers to a tour of Parliament before their concert. The event saw 17-year-old Ysgol y Strade pupil Osian Bowen make his performance debut with the choir. “It was an exceptional evening and an experience worthy of the choir’s 50th anniversary celebrations,” said choir chairman Mel Harries. “The experience of visiting Westminster and being so welcomed by a distinguished audience of peers, MPs and distinguished guests from the London Welsh Society will live long in the memory for choristers.” The choir and their distinguished musical director Eifion Thomas were officially welcomed to Parliament by Nia Griffith and Shadow Welsh Secretary Owen Smith MP.
