A total of 56 drivers were stopped by children from across Carmarthenshire for speeding outside their schools. Pupils from Ysgol Cae’r Felin in Pencader, Dafen, Cross Hands, Pembrey and Drefach primary schools are taking action to slow down motorists. They were joined by officers from the council’s road safety unit as well as officers from Dyfed-Powys Police and the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and used a Speed Indicator Device to find out what speed passing motorists were travelling. The device flashes their speed along with a happy face if they are within the limit or a sad face if they are over the limit. Offending drivers were given the option of speaking to the children to explain why they were speeding or receive a £100 fine and three penalty points. 21 motorcyclists given fixed penalty notices by roads policing officers in North Carmarthenshire and Powys for speeding on the weekend | Dyfed Powys Police | Heddlu Dyfed Powys Police officers carried out a special operation on Sunday targeting anti-social riders and drivers using roads in North Carmarthenshire and Powys. A total of 21 motorcyclists were given fixed penalty notices for speeding, and five were reported for summons for speeding. This means the offences are too serious to warrant a fixed penalty and need to be dealt with in a court.

Motorists in Carmarthenshire are being warned to watch their speed or pay the penalty. Speeding is a major concern for communities and was a top priority in the recent Residents’ Survey carried out by the council. As a result, a much work is being carried out by the Community Safety Partnership to reduce the speed of traffic and educate drivers about the consequences of driving too fast. The partnership has funded a Speed Indicator Device for Neighbourhood Policing Teams to use with schools and community groups. Anyone caught going over the limit is stopped and asked to explain themselves to the children or residents. It has also paid for three speed measurement devices for officers to deploy in areas where concerns of speeding have been raised by residents through PACT meetings. An accident a year for the last five years was good enough reason to introduce a 20mph speed limit outside a school at Heol y Neuadd, Tumble. Cllr Philip Hughes, making an executive board member decision on speed reduction for Carmarthenshire Council, said: “Five personal injuries in five years on this stretch of road demands a traffic calming measure of this nature.” The speed reduction will be on the A4310 outside Tumble Primary School. Police, local members emergency services and motoring organisations were all contacted and do not object to the proposals. Following a published notice on the changes one objection was received from a local resident who suggested 20mph speed limits should not be introduced on a main traffic route. The resident requested a status quo 30mph limit in Heol y Neuadd to remain in also suggested that many traffic calming measures would need to be introduced there to achieve compliance from motorists.
