People are invited to apply to become independent members of the Dyfed Powys Police and Crime Panel. The panel, which was set up to support and scrutinise the Police and Crime Commissioner, is made up of councillors from the four local authority areas, plus two independent members. They are recruited on a fixed term basis, and applications are now being invited to join the panel from October this year until October 2020. The role of the panel is: Support the Dyfed Powys Police and Crime Commissioner to exercise their functions effectively. Review the Police Commissioner’s annual draft Police and Crime Plan. Review the Police and Crime Commissioner’s annual draft budget. Review and scrutinise decisions and actions taken by the Police and Crime Commissioner. If necessary, review the proposed appointment or removal of the Chief Constable. Make reports or recommendations to the Police and Crime Commissioner as needed. With less than three weeks to go before the Police and Crime Commissioner elections, voters in the Dyfed Powys Police area are reminded that they will have a straight choice between two candidates. Dyfed Powys is one of the few areas in the country where only two candidates are standing for election on November 15. Elsewhere where there are two or more candidates, a Supplementary Vote system will operate whereby each voter will have the opportunity to vote for the first and second choice candidates. Police Area Returning Officer Bryn Parry-Jones said: “This will not be the case in Dyfed Powys. As there are only two candidates standing, voters have a straightforward choice and will be asked to make their selection using only one cross as in a General Election.” To take part in the election, householders must be registered to vote.   The biggest change to the way the police service is run in England & Wales is just six months away, when people will have the opportunity to vote for their first ever local Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC). People living in the Dyfed Powys Police Force area i.e. Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Powys and Ceredigion, will be given the opportunity to have their say on policing by voting for their preferred candidate on November 15th, this year. The key role of the PCC will be to set the strategic direction of the Police Force. Many of their duties will extend beyond those of Police Authorities’ to include commissioning of services and improved partnership working with criminal justice partners.
