Schoolchildren in the town will be the raising the roof at Llanelli Market in the run up to Christmas. Primary pupils will be showing off and entertaining the crowds with carol singing and Christmas themed songs throughout December. Brynsierfel, Yr Hendy, Bigyn, Halfway, Ysgol Y Castell, Stebonheath and Old Road are among the school choirs taking part outside The Teapot Café. Parents are being urged to come and support their schools and spread the Christmas cheer. County Markets Manager, Amanda Davies said: “We are all very excited here and look forward to welcoming the children. Market traders are already getting into the festive spirit and have started decking out their stalls with Christmas bling. Children from Llanelli schools are playing their part in supporting the local environment and making their communities brighter as part of a wildflower planting initiative. Carmarthenshire County Council trialled wildflower planting in several areas last summer, and received great feedback from local people and visitors about the natural, colourful look they bring over the summer months. Several council departments have got together again this year to prepare wildflowers for the season, and have also got local school children involved. Among them are children on the eco committee and gardening clubs at Halfway and Dafen primary schools. They joined the council’s housing and grounds maintenance teams to prepare ground and scatter seeds on housing land in the Dafen area. Supported by Environmental Works Project funding from Housing Services, the children helped plant seeds on land that had been weeded and rotivated in advance, and raked over the soil to ensure they were well planted. Schoolchildren across Carmarthenshire are to benefit from new sports equipment. It comes after the council successfully secured grant funding for 18 bags of equipment to help deliver sporting games during break and lunch times. Some 104 schools will share the items which include hoops, a ribbon set, skipping ropes, pom poms, tennis balls and bat and ball packs. The equipment, funded by the Welsh Government , will be used in sessions which will be delivered by each school’s Bronze Ambassadors under the Young Ambassador programme throughout the term. Ambassadors are trained by the council’s sport and leisure team and part of their role is to encourage and inspire other children in their school to take part in sport and physical activity by running lunchtime clubs. Children across Carmarthenshire have got something to smile about now that they know how to keep their teeth in tip-top condition. The county’s Healthy Schools Scheme, run by the county council, has been working alongside dental health and hygiene organisation Designed To Smile to run a daily toothbrushing programme in Carmarthenshire schools. The programme is aimed at helping improve the health of young children’s teeth in Wales. Children are shown how to brush their teeth, how long to brush for, and are also encouraged to brush their teeth as part of the school day. To celebrate the success of the schools which have already taken part, a ceremony was held at Trimsaran Leisure Centre. Pupils and staff from 20 Carmarthenshire schools attended, where they were presented with certificates and took part in healthy cookery demonstrations. Schoolchildren across Carmarthenshire will be treating their taste buds to a traditional roast on Wednesday, in celebration of the Food for Life Partnership’s second annual National Roast Dinner Day. Carmarthenshire County Council’s Catering Service is preparing to dish up thousands of roast beef dinners as part of the event on Wednesday, October 12. The roast dinner already features on the three-week rolling menus in all of the county’s primary schools, but it is hoped the event will encourage children to think about where their food comes from, how it is grown and the way it is cooked.
