Last year’s Chair of Carmarthenshire County Council has raised £14,000 for his two chosen charities. Cllr Terry Davies has shared the money raised between the Teenage Cancer Trust and the British Heart Foundation. The sum comes from a range of events including the proceeds from the Chair’s Charity Evening held at the Ashburnham, Pembrey, last November, which raised £2,830, and taking part in the Walrus Dip on Boxing Day in Pembrey, which raised £1,112. Cllr Terry Davies said: “There are so many worthwhile charities out there and I picked the British Heart Foundation because I had a quadruple heart bypass several years ago in Morriston, and the Teenage Cancer Trust because I have worked with youth clubs for the last 35 years. “When I started my year as Chair, taking the recession into account I would have been happy to raise £5-6,000, but the money has flooded in and I’m delighted to be able to share such a substantial sum between the two charities.”

The Chair of Carmarthenshire County Council has presented two cheques for £1,000 to medical charities in memory of his brother. Chair Cllr Terry Davies has chosen the British Heart Foundation and the Teenage Cancer Trust as his charities for his year in office. Cllr Davies and his niece Helen have donated the money in memory of his brother Canon Islwyn Davies, Rector of Ystradgynlais, who died in January. Burry Port firm Celtic Couriers is one of the number of businesses making sure a fund-raising party for the Teenage Cancer Trust goes with a swing. The courier and delivery business has donated a special prize for the raffle and auction at the Grand Ball being staged at The Diplomat Hotel, Llanelli, on Friday, June 29 (7pm). "We are very grateful to Celtic Couriers and all the other individuals and businesses who are helping to support this wonderful event," said one of the Ball organisers, Llangennech Councillor Gwyneth Thomas. "It's a very worthwhile cause and we are hoping for a full house on the night. "The prize from Celtic Couriers is for a four-ball round at The Ashburnham Championship Links Golf Club in Pembrey. "The prize has been generously donated by Mr Ivor Skinner and the team at Celtic Couriers and the winner is bound to enjoy the day as The Ashburnham is known as one of our premier golfing venues." Rhydian Roberts, Côr Curiad and Côr Meibion Llanelli, Selwyn Samuel Centre, Llanelli. They came from as far away as Scotland. Some came from North Lincolnshire, Southampton and Brighton. There were even a couple of hundred from Felinfoel! The Rhydian Roberts Fan Club must be as well travelled as the Llanelli’s Scarlets rugby team. They certainly made sure that visiting Munster rugby fans had their work cut out trying to find a spare hotel room in Llanelli on Saturday night. For the first time, the ‘Full House’ notices went up at the Selwyn Samuel Centre in Llanelli, with 1,200 packed into the bowls hall. The gala concert had been arranged by the ladies of Côr Curiad to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust, with a cheque for an amazing £14,000 being handed over on the night. Llanelli library Assistant Steffi Lewis is asking people to support her on a 10-hour bikeathon. Steffi is raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust in the name of a friend and colleague, and has already collected £1,800. She is now aiming to raise a further £1,200 and the bikeathon is part of the fundraising effort. It is taking place on today (Friday, March 23), at Llanelli Library, from 8am to 6pm. Steffi is asking people to support the cause through sponsorship or just to drop in on the day. It is part of the goal for the Thunderwalk 2012, taking place on May 12 and 13, which Steffi, Aled Richards, Peter Tiffin and Daniel Alliston are entering to raise money for the charity. The walk involves teams of four making their way around a 54 mile route in the Brecon Beacons National Park within 24 hours.
