The funeral of the man who was recognised as ‘The Voice’ of Parc y Scarlets, Stradey Park and Stebonheath will be held on Friday (April 17). Tributes to Monro Walters have been pouring in since his sudden death on Saturday, March 28. “His family have been very moved by the loving tributes that have been paid to Monro,” said his friend Robert Lloyd. “They would like to express their gratitude to everyone. The tributes to Monro have given them strength to get through this very difficult period.” Mr Walters was 69. He lived in Pwll. He is survived by his wife Maxine and children Gethin, Rhys and Rhiannon. The funeral on Friday April 17, takes the form of a public service at Greenfield Chapel, 11am, followed by private burial at Holy Trinity Church, Pwll at 12.30pm. “We are expecting a large crowd of mourners at the funeral as we say our farewells to Monro, a man universally acknowledged in Llanelli as a gentleman and all-round ‘good guy’,” said Mr Lloyd. It has taken a full 24 hours for the death of our dear friend Monro Walters to sink in. A man for all seasons - a voice for all occasions. Monro's sudden death leaves a massive hole in the life of the community we call Llanelli. It is hard to comprehend what Maxine and family are feeling. His departure was so swift that there is still a profound sense of disbelief. I was proud and privileged to call Monro a friend. But he was also much more - a committed professional, a wonderful colleague, a truly humble man with a lovely, warm and generous personality. He had a laugh that could kick-start a chorus. He could sing - but he could also inspire, inform and entertain just by being Monro and talking. The voice was class. Our last conversation was on Wednesday night. The programme for this World War One centenary concert staged by Llanelli Rotary Club carried the bold letters, 'Lest we forget'. The words were foremost in everyone's minds (musicians, singers, narrators and audience members) as a supremely fitting commemoration was staged at Greenfield Chapel, Llanelli. It was an evening which tugged at the heart strings and brought a tear to many eyes. It was a concert which told the story of World War One, with sensitive narration of poetry and prose linking the choral contributions. The concert was in aid of the British Legion's Poppy Appeal in South West Wales. The President of Llanelli Rotary Club Hywel Bassett opened the proceedings and explained: "As a Rotary Club, we will soon be approaching our own 100th anniversary in Llanelli and we wanted to pay our own unique tribute to those who died during the war, those who were injured and those who took part, both at home and abroad. Llanelli Rotary Club welcomed a new member at the weekly meeting held at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli. Cerith Owens was welcomed into membership by Llanelli Rotary Club president Alan Owen. Mr Owens was proposed into membership by Rotarian Monro Walters. In his acceptance speech, Mr Owens said that it was a privilege and an honour to be invited to join Llanelli Rotary Club. Married to Alison with three sons, Cerith lives in Bynea, Llanelli, but his roots are in the Swansea Valley, in Cwmtwrch. He has a BSc (Hons) Degree in Geology and an MSc in Applied Environmental Geology.  He has worked as a Geotechnical Engineer for more than 25 years and has been involved in major projects throughout South Wales. The newest recruit to Llanelli Rotary Club is the 'owner' of one of the most famous voices in Llanelli. Monro Walters is the voice of the world famous Scarlets of Llanelli, the man who provides a rich baritone commentary to some magical rugby moments. Mr Walters is the master of the public address service at Parc y Scarlets - and at Stebonheath Park, home of Llanelli AFC (the Reds). He was welcomed into membership of Llanelli Rotary Club by President Graham Williams (pictured left). Mr Walters said he was very proud to be joining the second oldest club in Wales. He added that he was looking forward to making a significant contribution to the work of Llanelli Rotary Club in Llanelli and beyond.
