A freedom of information request has cast doubt on the Welsh Government’s claims about the safety of the M4 around Newport. A local resident in Newport queried the Welsh Government’s use of safety statistics at its M4 promotional exhibitions in September. The exhibitions told the Welsh public that “the current accident rates on the M4 between Magor and Castleton are higher than average for UK motorways” [1]. However the Welsh Government has revealed that the higher accident rates only applied to three of the six junctions, and for the years 2006-2008 [2]. Gareth Clubb, Director of Friends of the Earth Cymru, said: “This is an extraordinary revelation. The Welsh Government claims that accident rates on the M4 are higher than the national average. But the data it used – described as “current” – was nearly a decade old. In celebration of Rotary International's 110 years of accomplishments around the world two Mayoral receptions were held recently. The Mayor of Torfaen, Cllr Mandy Owen, hosted a reception for the Presidents of her four local Rotary Clubs – Cwmbran; Cwmbran Vale; Henllys and Pontypool to recognise their club members' outstanding contribution to the area. Later in the day, it was the turn of the Right Worshipful Mayor the Mayor of Newport, Cllr Matthew Evans, to ask the Presidents of the Rotary Clubs of Caerleon; Newport; Newport St. Woolos and Newport Uskmouth to pass on his thanks to their members for their service to the community by hosting afternoon tea in the Mayor's Parlour. Pontypool's Jeff Evans won the Welsh light-heavyweight title by beating champion Shon Davies, from Llanelli, at the Newport Centre on Saturday night. Davies retired at the start of the seventh round with a damaged nose after Evans had dominated every round. Evans claims Welsh title (From Campaign Series) :
