The Gorslas and Cross Hands Men's Society celebrated its 40th Anniversary with an excellent lunch at the Cottage Inn, Llandeilo. After an enjoyable meal, the members were addressed by 'St David' who called in on his way from a monastery at Machynys, Llanelli, to visit one of his disciples, Teilo, whose hermitage was nearby. A fundraising Curry Night for the Llanelli Railway Goods Shed Trust project raised £1400. The event was held at the Ali Raj restaurant in Trinity Road, Llanelli, and was hosted by Llanelli MP Nia Griffith, chairman of the Trust, and the Rev Eldon Phillips, one of the trustees. "The response from the public and supporters of the trust was magnificent," said Trust secretary Richard Roper. "We are very grateful to the Ali Raj restaurant and prize and raffle donors for making it such a successful night." Rev Eldon Phillips  dressed up as Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the occasion. The event was also attended by civic dignitaries, including the Mayor of Llanelli Shahana Najmi. Auction items included a stunning painting of Carningli by award-winning artist Vicki Cooke and a very unusual 'photograph through a bottle', taken by Llanelli Photographic Society member Alun Lewis. The Llanelli Railway Goods Shed Trust’s first fundraising evening was a great success. More than £900 was raised on the evening - thanks to ticket sales, a raffle and an auction. The evening was hosted by Nia Griffith MP, Roger Price, Mayor of Llanelli, and the Reverend Eldon Phillips. Eldon dressed up as Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the occasion. The venue was the Ali Raj restaurant in Trinity Road, Llanelli. Plans for the regeneration of the Grade II listed goods shed building are moving ahead, with an application for funds now being considered by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Proposals for the building near Llanelli Railway Station involve establishing a multi-purpose community hub to include arts facilities, a cafe and a heritage centre. There was a memorable musical summer soiree staged at Llanelly House - possibly the biggest social occasion held at the historic mansion for more than 150 years. The event was staged by Sue Roberts, one of the trustees of Llanelly House, and her husband Peter. It marked something of a first for Llanelly House, with characters from the building's history 'coming to life' for the occasion. It was also an opportunity for guests at the soiree to tour the house and view the new interactive digital features which have been installed in Llanelly House. The music for the occasion was organised by Cerith Owens, the director of Llanelli-based Loud Applause Productions. The soloists for the evening were Jordan Williams, Keely Morgan, violinist Simmy Singh and harpist Ffion Elin Williams. Llanelly House has gone back into its own past to attract visitors from the Eisteddfod - by resurrecting the 7th Baronet Sir Thomas Stepney! Pentre Cyngor Sir Gâr had a surprise visit on Friday from Sir Thomas aka the Rev Eldon Phillips to chat about his life history and recommend a visit to Llanelly House.

The Rev Eldon Phillips played out the role of St David (complete with staff and monk's habit) in an entertaining after-dinner speech at last week's meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club at the Stradey Park Hotel. President Melanie Carol-Cliffe was in the chair. The vote of thanks to Rev Phillips was given by Past President Robert Lloyd. The next meeting of Llanelli Rotary Club is a Fellowship meeting at the Stradey Park Hotel on Friday, March 18. Llanelli Rotary Club will be holding a Race Night at the New Dock Stars Rugby Club on Friday, March 25. The annual Rotary Ball is being staged at the Stradey Park Hotel on April 22.
