Members of Llanelli Rotary Club were at the Tesco superstore in Parc Trostre, Llanelli, to rattle their collection buckets for the 'End Polio Now' campaign. The Llanelli Club also teamed up with their daughter club of Cefn Sidan Rotary for a curry night and quiz at the Masala restaurant in West End, Llanelli. The event raised a further £450 for the 'End Polio Now' campaign. Two women have been fined £75 for dropping cigarette ends in Llanelli’s Parc Trostre. The council’s environmental enforcement officers were on patrol in the area and issued fixed penalty notices to the women, one aged 38; the other aged 65. If they don’t pay, they could be taken to court where the maximum fine they could receive is £2,500. The council now hopes this will act as a warning that anyone caught dropping litter will be fined. Research shows that 83% of litter found on the streets of Carmarthenshire is smoking-related. The car was parked on the entrance road to McDonald’s and the woman was seen by council environmental enforcement officers who were on patrol in the area. Failure to pay the fixed penalty notice could result in prosecution in the magistrates court and a maximum fine of £2,500. Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones is reminding people that throwing litter – including cigarette ends – is against the law. A total of 908 tyres were collected to be recycled in an amnesty held in Llanelli. Residents were able to take along any unwanted tyres to Tesco in Parc Trostre to dispose of free of charge. The amnesty was organised by Tidy Towns, a Welsh Assembly Government-funded initiative delivered in partnership by Carmarthenshire County Council and Keep Wales Tidy. It is also being supported by Fly-tipping Action Wales, a national initiative that brings together 40 partner agencies from across Wales to tackle the problem of fly-tipping. The aim is to encourage householders to dispose of their waste responsibly and discourage fly-tipping which is not only a blight on the landscape, but costs local authorities millions of pounds every year to clean up and causes harm to wildlife and the environment.
