Like most people, you probably put out your blue bags for recycling, but what about your old electricals? Did you know a typical toaster contains enough plastic to make 76 yoghurt pots and enough steel to make 25 food cans? So don’t leave your old electrical appliances to gather dust in the cupboard or throw them in the bin where they will just end up in landfill. Recycle them instead at any of the county’s waste recycling centres at Trostre (Llanelli); Wernddu (Ammanford); Nantycaws (Carmarthen); Llangadog and Whitland. Small electrical items can also be taken along to any of the 10 WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) banks across Carmarthenshire. New recycling banks for unwanted or broken small electrical appliances have been introduced in Carmarthenshire. The council, in partnership with DHL Envirosolutions, have provided 10 WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) banks across the county. Residents can take along small electronic and electrical items such as hairdryers, radios, toasters, kettles and mobile phones; in fact any electrical item that can fit inside the bin will be accepted, recycled and turned into something new. Remember though if it is still in working order, someone else may be able to make use of it, so why not try your local charity shop first. Old hairdryers, kettles, vacuum cleaners and even a video camera have been recycled by residents in Carmarthenshire. The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) events were held at Llanelli and Carmarthen leisure centres. Organised by Carmarthenshire County Council in partnership with DHL Envirosolutions, the aim was to raise awareness that small electrical items can be recycled. People were encouraged to bring along any old electrical items they had hanging around the home that they no longer wanted. In total, 626kg of old electricals were brought along to be recycled – about three skip fulls! The events were held during the Easter school holidays as part of the Child Safety Fun Days organised by the council’s Road Safety Unit.
