A new post is hoping to raise awareness of cancer amongst people with learning disabilities. Macmillan Cancer Support have funded Tracey Lloyd, a Learning Disability Nurse, who is based at Ty Bryngwyn, Prince Phillip Hospital, Llanelli, to take a closer look at strengths and needs of services for all concerned with learning disabilities and cancer. This new initiative hopes to improve the outcome for people with learning disabilities, their families and supporters, and work with staff within primary and secondary care services to recognise the issues they face. The project stems across Wales and is keen to educate and empower people, and help collaborative working build a healthier future. The choristers of Cor Meibion Llanelli have raised nearly £200 for the Ty Bryngwyn Hospice Appeal by staging a charity concert at the Thomas Arms in Llanelli. Choir chairman Mel Harries said: "We support the hospice appeal throughout the year with different events, including the annual Festival of Light in the St Elli Centre. "The landlord and landlady of the Thomas Arms Hotel very kindly asked us to play at a special concert for the hospice appeal and the end result was an extra donation of nearly £200 for the charity." Mrs Susan Thomas, the secretary of the Ty Bryngwyn Hospice Fundraising Committee, said the appeal members were very grateful to the Thomas Arms and Cor Meibion Llanelli for their continued support. Ty Bryngwyn’s In-patient Unit has now been open for 10 years, providing specialist palliative inpatient care for patients in Carmarthenshire. The staff and trustees of Ty Bryngwyn hospice would very much like to thank the community for their support over the past 10 years. They are holding an open day on Saturday, October 12, at Ty Bryngwyn, to which everyone is cordially invited. The event will be opened by a local celebrity at 2pm with entertainment provided throughout the afternoon by Cor Meibion Llanelli, Llanelli Male Voice Choir. Stalls, raffles and free refreshments will also be available before the event closes at 4pm. The day will take the form of a celebration to recognise the 10 years of service provided from Ty Bryngwyn and to say thank you to the hospice appeal's many supporters. Please note that limited parking will be available close to the hospice at Bryngwyn School.

A new project launched in Llanelli will enable more patients with advanced and incurable illness to be cared for in their own home in their last phase of life. Given the choice, 74% of patients receiving end of life care wish to spend their time at home and thanks to an incredible donation of £50,000 from the Ty Bryngwyn Hospice Committee, staff from Hywel Dda Health Board and Carmarthenshire County Council today launched the End of Life Equipment Project. Once patients who wish to be cared for at home are identified, the project’s aim is to rapidly provide the required equipment to enable professionals to provide the care needed in the patient’s home, where they can be supported by family and friends in familiar surroundings. The Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli will be hosting the annual Pretty in Pink fundraising event on October 18 from 7pm. The event has been organised by the ladies of Ray Gravell & Friends Charitable Trust. This year all proceeds from the evening are for the Ty Bryngwyn Hospice in Llanelli. The trust aims to raise £10,000 to donate to the hospice. There will be drinks on arrival before taking a seat in the Alexander Suite for a three course dinner. During the meal, there will be a range of fashion shows courtesy of Outfit, Nanette’s and Mossies. The tickets are £26 per person and must be booked in advance by contacting the venue. If you can hear a click-clicking sound in the Trimsaran area, it's likely you are listening to the busy knitting needles of local resident Viola Edwards. The 80-year-old, who lives at the county council's Llys Y Godian Sheltered Scheme, spends most of her days knitting countless bonnets, matinee coats, booties and shawls - all in aid of two causes very dear to her heart. The great grandmother hand-makes the woolly warmers for the special care baby units at Singleton and Glangwili hospitals, and also knits to sell and raise money for Llanelli's Ty Bryngwyn Hospice. "I want to show my appreciation for the staff at the special care baby units, and two of my great grandchildren were born prematurely, and they cared for them wonderfully," said Mrs Edwards. "I have no idea how many baby clothes I have knitted over the years - probably too many to count - but unfortunately I can't knit as much as I'd like to these days because of my health."
