Another chapter of Bronglais Hospital’s Front of House scheme is complete with the Pathology Department moving into new state of the art facilities. As part of this change, the Biochemistry and Haematology Laboratories have merged to provide a single Blood Sciences facility. Whilst this concept is common in many hospitals, as a new build, this was the first such to be purpose built within Wales. The adjacent Public Health Wales Microbiology Laboratory enables a single specimen reception to serve all laboratory areas, thus reducing much previous duplication. The departments, previously located at opposite ends of the hospital complex, are now co-located in the main hospital, adjacent to the CT scanner. New equipment is expected in the coming months, further developing pathology services at the site. Hywel Dda Health Board | Creating a safer pathology service for local patients Hywel Dda Health Board is set to create a safer and sustainable pathology service for patients following recommendations made by the Royal College of Pathologists. The expert body recommended that histopathology services within the Hywel Dda Health Board area should be re-organised into fewer, larger departments. This is in keeping with the Welsh Government document ‘The Future Delivery of Pathology Services in Wales’. Patients will not see a physical change in service, but behind-the scenes work and autopsies will be organised from Carmarthenshire. Facilities to view and store the deceased will remain at each of the four hospitals (Bronglais, Glangwili, Prince Philip and Withybush).
