A Welsh-speaking architectural team has been appointed to work on detailed plans to redevelop Aberystwyth University’s Pantycelyn student hall of residence. The contract has been awarded to Lawray Architects following a competitive tendering process by the University. The company will be responsible for delivering the next stage of the development plans for the £10m project to provide 200 en-suite bedrooms for students and catered provision. Social spaces and facilities which can be used both by students and the local community are also included in the proposals. As part of its contract, Lawray will prepare the application to obtain Listed Building Consent for Pantycelyn which was built in 1953 and is Grade II listed. The work carried out by Lawray Architects will allow the University to progress to submitting and receiving planning permission and to have a detailed specification which can be used to go out to tender for the contractor(s) to undertake the work in Pantycelyn. Aberystwyth University has announced that Balfour Beatty has been selected as the preferred bidder for the development of its new student accommodation. The £45million pound scheme will be located on Penglais Farm, on land immediately behind the existing award winning Pentre Jane Morgan student village and within walking distance to the University’s Penglais campus. The new development will provide en-suite accommodation for 1000 students and include 100 studio flats. The accommodation includes enhanced learning and communal zones, in keeping with Aberystwyth’s progressive approach; the first students are expected to take up residence in September 2014. Aberystwyth University has confirmed that outline planning permission for its proposed new residential development to accommodate up to 1,000 students has been granted by the Ceredigion County Council. The new residences will be located at Penglais Farm, on land immediately adjacent to the University’s existing award winning Pentre Jane Morgan Student Village, and within easy walking distance of its all facilities on its main Penglais Campus.  The University is currently undertaking the final stages of a competitive OJEU procurement process to design, build, fund and operate the development with two remaining participants, Miller Consortium and Balfour Beatty. The target date for building work to commence is late 2012, and for student occupancy is in September 2014. Construction costs are expected to be in the region of £40 million.
